Greetings!

time fliesHave you ever wondered why it seems that time passes so quickly the older we get?  Remember when we were young?  How we longed for summer vacation but it seemed to take forever for the school year to end?  These days it is nothing to suddenly find three months have passed with barely a notice.  There is a Latin phrase for this: Tempus Fugit - Time Flies

Perhaps, and this is just a thought, perhaps it is anticipation that slows time and we, as adults, have lost the ability to anticipate.  As children we were free of distractions, free of burdens, free of responsibilities.  Our only tasks were to grow, learn and explore the world around us and so time went by slowly.  It seemed to take forrrreverrrr for a year to pass.

Then, as we entered adulthood, life became more complicated and hectic.   Once we added work, marriage and children, it became necessary to Hourglassschedule our lives.  And because our time is parceled, it tends to move more quickly from timeframe to timeframe.   We find there is not enough free time to do the things we enjoy.  Our lives become routine, boring and mundane, but still even the mundane travels quickly. This is how time moves when living a scheduled life; it passes before we even notice that it has.

So how do we slow down time?  How do we minimize the routine, boring and mundane?  First of all we need to remember to only do the things that bring us joy.  Not in a hedonistic context but in a healthy, positive way.  Each of us controls our choices and if a task is unpleasant, then why are we doing it?  If we don't want to do it, but it is still necessary, perhaps it can be delegated and if it is not, then forgo it entirely.

milestonesSecond, we should try to create more milestones because, by their very nature, milestones force us into anticipation mode.  For most of us, our yearly milestones are reduced to birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays.  But what about the rest of the year?  Where are the plans for joyous events?  How did we let ourselves be convinced there is no time for vacation?  If not weekly, do you plan to do something fun at least quarterly?  And it's not about money - even something simple like a potluck picnic in the park can be an event worth anticipating, especially if it's with family or special friends.

Finally, get conscious in your life.  Become aware of each and every minute and say 'yes' to the tasks, events, chores and commitments that make you happy.  Find a way to create the anticipation that slows down time.

We began this article with a Latin phrase - Tempus Fugit and so we are going to end it with another:  Carpe Diem - Seize the Day.  It is a carpe diemcelebratory circle - the more conscious you are in choosing to do what gives you joy, the more you have to anticipate.  The more time you spend in anticipation, the slower time passes.  The slower time passes, the more time you have to do the things that give you joy!

Electronic Coupons

Did you know that discount store coupons were first introduced by C.W. Post in 1895?
Coupons were an instant 'hit' their release steadily increasing with 2.1 billion (with a B) produced in 1970.  Their popularity soared in the next 22 years until hitting a record high in 1992 of 292 Billion (that's a capital B).

couponsFor some reason, 1992 was a pivotal year and coupon popularity has declined ever since. The hard statistics are unavailable to explain the reason behind the decline, but as a consumer, I have a theory. We don't have time to read all the advertising circulars much less take the time to clip coupons.

How many of you have mailboxes stuffed with paper promotions that you toss without ever reading?  (Wow - you don't all have to put your hands up at once!)  That's a lot of wasted paper and countless lost advertising dollars.

Now there are better ways and we want to share one of our favorites - Shortcuts.com offers electronic coupons that you post to your grocerycoupon shopper store loyalty card.  Then, when you check out and the store loyalty card barcode is swiped, those coupons are automatically applied to your bill.

WHAT?!? No paper to cut? No coupons forgotten on your kitchen counter? No waiting behind someone while they shuffle through a huge wad of coupons to see what they can use? No, No and NO

AND - if you add the coupons to your loyalty card but don't use them right away, you will receive an email reminder when they are nearing expiration.  It's TRUE.  This is technology at it's best!  Paperless, eco-friendly, economically savvy and oh, I almost forgot the best part - this program is FREE!  Yes FREE!

shortcutsSo check out www.shortcuts.com  You do have to sign up for a profile and it's obvious this is just another way to track our spending habits, but shoot they're already doing that with the loyalty cards anyway so why not save a little money in the process??

Give
www.shortcuts.com a try and see how much you can save - Shortcuts.com, one of our favorite things!

["Our Favorite Things" gives us an opportunity to share people, places, events and things that we truly love and that you might too.  We have no business affiliation with any company or individual featured here.  We just want to share good things with you and if our recommendations help build business for someone else or saves you time or money, GREAT!!!]
The Word For June:  Xeriscape

xeriscape1Xeriscape (pronounced as though it begins with a Z [i.e. zeroscape] is landscaping designed specifically for areas that are susceptible to drought or for properties where water conservation is desired.

Derived from the Greek xeros meaning "dry," the term, xeriscape means literally "dry landscape."  If your goal is water conservation, xeriscape landscaping doesn't necessarily mean all plants must come from the cacti family or your yards be rock gardens.

A xeriscape landscaping policy allows you to use the plants you want, but insists on common-sense measures that will help conserve water, such as grouping plants with similar water requirements together.

xeriscape2One common element of xeriscape landscaping however, is the reduction of lawn grass areas since lawn grass is so thirsty.

Another widespread tactic in xeriscape landscaping is the deployment of indigenous plants, since they are adapted to the local climate and consequently require less water.

Xeriscape landscaping incorporates seven basic principles which lead to saving water:

·   Planning and design

·   Soil analysis

·  Practical turf areas

·   Appropriate plant selection

·   Efficient irrigation

·   Use of mulches

·   Appropriate maintenance

xeriscape3If you'd like to limit your water consumption, find a reputable landscaping company skilled in xeriscape or call Executive Errands.  Our landscaping Service Providers can help you create a xeriscape landscape that not only will help you do your part for the planet, but will also be beautiful.

 The DTV Transition

DTVYou'd have to live in a cave not to know that June 12th is D(TV)-Day.  Apparently we're all switching to digital television broadcasting (whether we want to or not) and if we have analog television sets, we may not be able to receive some (or any) stations.

Does anyone even still have an analog tv set?  Does anyone still use an antenna?  Does anyone remember 'rabbit ears'? (ok, now I'm showing my age)

If you (or someone you know) crosses the June 12th deadline and suddenly find yourself channel-less, give Executive Errands a call.  We have Service DTV2Providers skilled in the ways of satellite, cable and digital tv service.  They can do something simple like re-program your remote control and are equally adept at configuring the most complicated home theater system.

When you need something done and don't know who to call - Executive Errands - no matter what you need, you can rest assured our Concierges and our Service Providers are reliable, responsive, insured and provide high quality work.  We are available at your convenience.

It's probably obvious, but Tempus Fugit Ita Carpe Diem means "Time Flies so Seize the Day!"

M. Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled once said " Until you value yourself, you will not value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it."

LifeisShortEach and every day is full of opportunities to learn, to perform acts of kindness, to meet new people, to embrace this temporary life we're given.  Make the most of it.  Plan events that create anticipation so you can slow down the passage of time.  Value yourself enough to focus on the things that make you happy and find a way to avoid the things that don't.  Life is short - don't let it pass you by!
