Greetings!

When was the last time you slid down a slide?

When I hear the word 'slide' my mind immediately conjures up a PowerPoint presentation.  I spend so much time working on my own company or helping other companies be more productive, that I often lose sight of what it means to balance work and fun.

My lack of balance hit home a few weeks ago while attending my grandson's tenth birthday party.  The party was Executive Errands Logoheld at a great place in Indio called PUMP IT UP.  They have two rooms filled with huge inflatable toys, including several slides.  When we first got there, all the kids were running around, jumping to their heart's content while the adults stoically sat on benches lined up along the walls.  I'm sure we all looked like statues.  Serious, adult-like statues. As I stared at the slide in front of me, an imposing inflatable monster, with it's top some 16 feet up, I suddenly got an urge to try it.  A little concerned about looking like an idiot, but not enough to stop me, I grabbed a plastic 'rug' and began the ascent.

This was no easy feat since the slide is built for kids and each 'rung' sunk deep into the air inside (imagine climbing up a mountain of mashed potatoes), but climb it I did.  Winded (no comments please, about my lack of physical prowess), I sat at the top looking down at what seemed a very steep distance.  Hmmmm  I took a breath and shoved off...  WHOOSH... THUD..... and landed kattywampus at the bottom.  My heart was racing and I had a grin the width of the Grand Canyon.  It was a race to the top after that.  For the rest of the party I climbed and slid, laughing like one of the 10 year olds.  What a rush!  What FUN!  It wasn't long until some of the other adults joined in and I'm here to tell you, we all had a ball.

slideAfter the party, I sat in reflection, wondering exactly when was it we stopped having fun?  Who wrote the rule that once you reach adulthood, it is unacceptable to play like a kid? Why is everything so serious? And just why do we worry about what others might think if we actually do act like a fool?

I don't know about you, but for me, life is way too short not to have fun.  Yes, the bills have to be paid and the bed always needs to be made.  There will always be meetings and social events that require a respectable amount of conservatism.  I too can be serious when the circumstances dictate, but now I am conscious of the need for balance.  I make time for fun.  And I am perfectly ok looking the fool in the name of laughter.  Laugh with me or at me, makes no difference as long as you're laughing.

For me, the slide was cathartic.  It made me feel alive and even more committed to helping free up the lives of our clients.  The more we can take over your tasks, the better we do at simplifying your life, the more balance you can create, the happier you will be in the long run.  My personal new motto: It's important  to work hard to build a great life, but it's more important to enjoy the life you build!

seal with ballWork - Life Balance.  That's a tricky one.  I purposely titled this month's newsletter as 'A Slippery Slope' because normally that phrase has a negative connotation.  In general, when we hear it, we think 'uh oh, there's danger ahead' or 'we're sliding out of control'.

Instead of being negative, why not reframe 'a slippery slope' to mean 'be conscious of the slides in life'?  Look for ways to create balance, to have fun, to insert more laughter into your daily routine.  Above all else, find ways to celebrate life.

We here at Executive Errands are available to answer your questions, will customize a program to suit your needs, and will help to bring balance into your life.  One call is all it takes.

As always, thank you all for your kind and supportive feedback on our newsletter.  Back issues are available through the website.

Have a wonderful rest of May and a great Memorial weekend - and try out a slide - you'll be glad you did.

Sincerely,
