We thank you all!

brooms in progress As we sweep up after another wonderful Waterford Homes Tour & Crafts Exhibit, we are thinking about all of the wonderful people who make this preeminent East Coast event such a sustained success.

The villagers of Waterford open their homes and extend their graceful hospitality to all of our Fair visitors (and vendors and volunteers too). Many, many of them are among the more than 400 volunteers from in and outside the area who donate countless hours to fair planning and execution.

Our artisans' demonstrations of their skills teach us about the skills and tools of American heritage crafts; their beautiful work draws visitors from Maine to California and Texas to Michigan, and we are thankful to be able to share with Fair visitors their art and knowledge.

We thank each and every one of our partnering organizations, from the reenactors of the Independent Loudoun Virginia Rangers and the 9th Virginia Infantry, to the civic and community groups who provide parking services, traffic management, a variety of food booths, and educational exhibits.

We thank each of our corporate sponsors for this year's event: Loudoun Mutual Insurance Company, Tuscarora Restaurant Group, Middleburg Bank, Morningside House, and Capital Party Rentals. And we thank the many individual donors who so generously help underwrite some of our expenses for this event.

We thank Fran Holmbraker and the rest of our staff who go above and beyond to make the Fair such a spectacular event year after year.

And we thank you, all of our Fair visitors, whose attendance allows us to carry on our mission of preservation through education, for the the coming year and the years to come.

Best regards,

Two Series concerts and a special fundraising concert will fill our beautiful Old School Auditorium with voices in October and November.

First, on October 21, 18 singers and three pianists from the Maryland Opera Studio present "A Grand Night for Singing," the fourth concert of the 2012 Waterford Concert Series.

MD opera studio Kate Naydeck
Kate Naydeck of the Maryland Opera Studio in Dominick Argento's Opera

Opera highlights and American musical gems about love and art showcase these fine young voices, from Floria Tosca's "Vissi d'arte" to the card scene from Carmen, music by Rossini, Beethoven, Strauss, Cole Porter, Bernstein, Sondheim and more. Large selections from La Bohème and The Magic Flute offer previews of full-scale operas coming to the Maryland Opera Studio home base in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center of the University of Maryland in November and April. This concert is sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. John H. Cook III. This concert will begin at 4 p.m.

James McMurtry Next is the November 3 fundraising concert, Old School House Rock, featuring indie rock singer-songwriter James McMurtry and son Craig, joined by local bands The Bitter Liberals and the Chicken Noodle Hammer. McMurtry spent some of his childhood in Waterford.

Doors open at 6:30, beverages and snacks will be for sale.
