Santa to visit the Mill on Sunday
Santa Claus will consult with children about their behavior in 2009 and its relation to their gift lists from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, December 6 -- the second day of Christmas at the Mill in Waterford. The Waterford Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization will provide hot cider and bake sale items for shoppers. This is the third year Foundation volunteers and staff will bring to life this country shopping opportunity, in a Mill dressed up for the holidays. Grateful thanks to all of them. Pottery, painting, and wood turning are among pieces offered at Christmas at the Mill.

The Corner Store, decorated for the holidays. [photo by Ed Lehmann]
To a joyous season
Dear Waterford
Foundation Members and Friends,
There are few places more beautiful than Waterford during the holiday season, and we
all look forward to this special time.
We especially want to thank you for your tremendous support during the
year and to wish you and your families a most joyous holiday season. The Foundation is so grateful for your
support not only financially, but also in terms of the hundreds of volunteer
hours that many of you give so freely.
We hope you will join us this weekend during our Christmas
at the Mill, and on Sunday December 6 for the fabulous piano concert and
reception in Middleburg.
Recently our Development Committee sent out our Annual
Appeal with its lovely color photos of the school, the village, and the Phillips
Farm. We hope you will continue your
generosity to the Foundation through your gift in support of our preservation
and educational efforts.
Happy holidays to all!
With sincere thanks,

President |
For those special holiday gifts, the 2009 Fair poster of
Jim Hanna's magnificent landscape photo of the Phillips Farm through the
gardens of the Griffith-Gover House and the hardcover book of his photos, Waterford, Virginia: Preserving Our Heritage, will be
available this weekend at Christmas at the Mill, and afterward at the
Foundation offices. Pricing is also special: $25 for unframed posters, $125
for framed ones, and $35 for the book.
And for those who love the Waterford Old School, consider
"investing" in a $100 Old School Construction Bond in honor of your family,
yourself, or a good friend this holiday season. Many invested in the 2004
Preservation Bonds to save the Phillips Farm from development. Today that
investment has grown into the glorious rural open space, eased in perpetuity,
with a new history and nature trail open for all to enjoy.
A Waterford Old School Construction Bond investment will
grow into the new auditorium with space again for concerts, lectures, plays,
parties, meetings, and Fair activities for all to enjoy. Be an investor in our
future. Contact development programs manager Kathleen
Hughes (khughes@waterfordfoundation.org
or 540-882-3018) to invest in a bond. You can also do so online.

Benefit Concert for Old School this Sunday in MiddleburgPreparations are set for this Sunday's piano four hands benefit concert in Middleburg, where musicians Myriam Avalos Teie
and Rosanne Conway will present a program including pieces by Liszt and Bizet, Vaughn Williams's Fantasia on Greensleeves, Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, and favorite holiday melodies. Concert proceeds will benefit the Raise the Roof Campaign to rebuild the
Waterford Old School auditorium. The concert will be at 4 p.m.
at the Sheila C. Johnson Performing Arts Center at The Hill School, 130
South Madison Street in Middleburg. A festive reception will follow. Tickets are $75 each. Make reservations by phone (540-882-3018). Pianists Rosanne Conway and Myriam Avalos Teie. |
Two new grants awarded for Foundation buildings
The Waterford Foundation has received two generous grants since the end of November. First, a $10,000 grant from Dominion Resources Services, Inc., is designated for the rebuilding of the Old School auditorium. We thank Dominion for its dedicated support of our preservation and education mission.
The $1.6 million Old School Capital Campaign continues, with initiatives including grant seeking, tax credits, fundraising events, and other donations. About $600,000 more is needed to meet the 75 percent goal set to allow construction to begin in 2010.
Second, the Loudoun Preservation Society has presented the Foundation with a $3,500 grant to help fund repainting of the John Wesley Community Church's exterior, work that will commence in the spring.
Members of Waterford's African American community completed the church in 1891. Regular services at this Gothic Revival structure, built on
the site of a former livery stable, continued into the 1960s. The Foundation purchased the property in 1999.
We are grateful to the society for its help in preserving this important symbol of Waterford's African American history.
