Walnut table, painting offered at Fair raffle

Two pieces of fine original craftsmanship have been
generously donated by two long-time exhibitors at the Waterford Homes Tour
& Crafts Exhibit: a walnut hall table and a folk art painting.
A lovely handcrafted walnut hall table by Mack S. Headley & Sons of Berryville,Virginia, at
18 inches wide by 36 inches long, is proportioned to fit in any home in a
variety of settings.
Donna Kriebel, of D. Masters Kriebel, has given us an exquisite
folk art painting in a hand-grained frame. The painting graces the cover of the
2009 Waterford Fair Booklet.
Each of these craftspeople are exhibiting at the Old School.
Presented by the Homes Tour and Crafts Exhibit, the raffles benefit the work of
the Waterford Foundation.
Tickets are $2 each for 6 for $10. Put your tickets toward
one or the other piece, or try for both! Tickets may be purchased at the Old
School Exhibit Area.
The drawing will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 4,
2009, at the Corner Store in the Village
Center. You need not be
present to win.

See you at the Fair!
Dear Members,
Don't miss the Waterford Homes Tour & Crafts Exhibit,
our major fundraising and educational event for the year on October 2, 3, and
4. Although the Waterford Fair is a
local event for many of us, it has a national reputation as one of the top
crafts fairs in America,
and we proudly welcome visitors from many different states. As you know it is
one of the best family days you can have, offering an unparalleled educational
experience along with heaps of entertainment and great food With free admission for children 12 and
under, the Fair literally offers something for everyone. You and your family can learn how traditional
crafts are made from America's
top craftspeople, purchase beautiful handmade items, talk to Revolutionary and
Civil War re-enactors, and visit Waterford's
unique historical homes and learn the tales behind them, all while being
entertained by musicians, dancers, magicians and more. In short, the Waterford Fair is an experience
to remember.
As members, please watch for your special invitation to
Varnishing Night in the mail. On
Wednesday evening, September 30, we will enjoy the opening of our Art and
Photography exhibits with corresponding receptions and Preview Night all rolled
into one.
What a wonderful picnic we had on Labor Day! We thank Mimi
Westervelt and the entire Phillips Farm Committee, along with our partners, the
Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy, local historical experts John and Bronwen
Souders, and our Waterford Foundation staff, including Kathleen Hughes, for
putting together a special family experience. After enjoying the picnic, we witnessed the grand opening of the Phillips
Farm Interpretative Trail and had the privilege to walk the trail while
learning of its natural and historical features. Children and adults were intrigued by the educational
program, which including tagging and releasing Monarch butterflies. We thank B'z's BBQ for donating all of the
profits from the barbecue sandwiches sold.
Please join us in our efforts to "Dig the Old School." We will have two booths available at the Fair
for you to renew membership and to contribute to our efforts to rebuild out
auditorium, which will be used as an educational and cultural center. We truly
appreciate all of your support.
See you at the Fair!
Sincerely yours,

President

Waterford Garden photo selected for 2009 Fair poster

For the first
time in its 66-year history, the Waterford Homes Tour & Crafts Exhibit will
feature a photograph on its annual, collectible Fair poster. Out of hundreds of photography entries, the work of Loudoun
County photographer Jim
Hanna won
"Best in Show" in the 2008 Fair Photography Exhibit.
This year, Jim's photo of the Phillips Farm as seen through
the garden of the Griffith-Gover House on Main Street, was selected by the
Waterford Foundation's Development Committee for the Fair's poster. This poster
will be sold as a fundraiser for the Foundation's campaign to rebuild the
fire-ravaged Waterford Old School auditorium. In addition to the poster, the Foundation
will be publishing a beautiful new hardcover book, Waterford, Virginia:
Preserving Our Heritage, which includes a brief history of the village as
well as Jim Hanna's lovely photographs taken during one week this May.
"We are so grateful to Jim Hanna for donating his photographs to our
capital campaign for the Old School," says Foundation President Susan
Sutter. "With the generosity of supporters like Jim, along with this
year's Fair activities, grants, and donations we're hoping to reach the $1.2
million we need to begin construction of the Old School auditorium next spring.
When the new auditorium is completed, it will serve again as the education and
cultural center for the region."
Jim Hanna has enjoyed photography since he was a child, and as an adult aims
his talents on "sustaining rural culture in the face of urban
sprawl." He has studied at New York's
International Center of Photography, the Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, and
the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
Jim lives and works in western Loudoun
County, Virginia.
After retiring from the World Bank in 2005, he established Jim Hanna
Photography, L.L.C., in 2006. He continues to develop his digital photography
through field work and regular seminars, and has had a number of his photos
recognized in a variety of juried shows.
The poster will be for sale at the Fair for $50. A limited number of framed prints will be offered at $250. Copies of the book Waterford, Virginia:
Preserving Our Heritage will be offered at $35.

Citizens celebrate opening of Phillips Farm Trail
About 75 Waterford
community members attended a Labor Day weekend picnic at the Old Mill to
celebrate the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of the Phillips Farm
Interpretive Trail on September 5. After enjoying a barbeque dinner
arranged by Foundation development mamager Kathleen Hughes, Phillips Farm Committee
Chair Mimi Westervelt and Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy (LWC) President Joe Coleman
cut the ribbon, and together with John Souders, citizens of all ages enjoyed a
tour of the natural and cultural history of the Phillips Farm along the new
trail.
Appreciation for this new educational resource on the farm and
the community was expressed to committee members, the Piedmont Community
Foundation's Peter M. Howard Memorial Fund (which provided a generous grant for
the trail), and Foundation staff Margaret Good and Martha Polkey. A gift
was presented to Rob Hale, in absentia, who designed the brochure, and designed
and constructed the posts and new signs for the trail.
Children's activities included a "Can You Find?"
hunt for information about the Phillips Farm and identifying, tagging and
releasing live Monarch butterflies. Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy
President Joe Coleman and his volunteers, who partner with the Foundation on
many Phillips Farm programs, discussed LWC goals and activities.

In August, LWC volunteers installed netting to protect some of the more than 1,000 trees and shrubs in the riparian buffer planting from rodent damage. LWC volunteers report that the plantings are thriving. Warren Hayford finishes attaching netting around a young oak in the Phllips Farm riparian buffer zone.
