Board and staff additions

Kathleen Hughes
Kathleen Hughes joins the staff [photo by Schuyler Richardson]

Former Waterford Foundation President Kathleen Hughes joined the Foundation's staff part time in May as Manager of Development Programs, replacing Annie Goode, who resigned in April to resume full-time work at ReedSmith LLC.
Kathleen was in her fourth term on the Waterford Foundation Board of Directors when she resigned to take the staff position. She was co-chair of the Education Committee as it launched the publication, walking tour, and Fair exhibit programs, as well as the George E. Bentley Memorial Lecture Series. We are fortunate to have retained a new staff member who has quickly and easily grasped the reins of our capital campaign to rebuild the Old School auditorium. Kathleen lives with her husband Neil in the Samuel Hough House on Second Street.
And we are equally pleased to have Bronwen Souders rejoin the Board of Directors, as Kathleen resigns, and to assume the chairmanship of the Education Committee. Bronwen and husband John received the Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008, and Bronwen has served four previous terms on the board (1986-1992 and 1993-1999), as well as president and acting executive director.
She is a docent in the Second Street School Living History Program, and most recently served as a consultant to Boru Communications during preparation of the African American history interactive segment that shortly will enhance the Foundation's website. The Souders live on Browns Lane.
Welcome and welcome back, Kathleen and Bronwen.

$100,000 Cabell Grant

for Old School Achieved!

It is a great pleasure to announce that thanks to the generosity of ever-faithful members and supporters, we have achieved the first goal of the Raise the Roof Capital Campaign--to raise $300,000 in contributions and pledges since the Cabell Foundation's 3-to-1 challenge grant was awarded last May, and so earn $100,000 more toward our campaign to rebuild the Old School auditorium. Total fundraising so far has reached almost 40 percent ($580,000) of our $1.6 million total fundraising goal and almost 50 percent of the $1.2 million needed to begin construction of the new auditorium. Thank you to all our kind donors!

Now onto the next phase which the Development Committee, co-chaired by Melanie Lockwood Herman and Tom Simmons, has designated as $600,000 to meet our construction-funding goal of $1.2 million. A new Raise the Roof Advisory Committee met on June 25 at the Old School to brainstorm ideas and offer suggestions. We are indebted to the individuals who are providing their time and expertise on this committee:  Jill Beach, Jim Behan and Connie Moore, Steve Combs, Dennis and Michele Cotter, Cary and Ann Gravatt, Robert and Catharine Patton, Mel Whitely, Cate Magennis Wyatt and Steve Wyatt. Watch for news of upcoming events planned by this group and our Board of Directors, following the success of the Waterford Country & Cottage Garden Tour in May and Bluegrass at Chestnut Hill in June.

Again, thank you to all who have contributed; and, if you have not had time yet to make your contribution or pledge...please remember that the money raised over the coming weeks is critical. We are all eager to get the Old School--both the classroom and the auditorium--rebuilt and available as a bright new venue that will bring concerts, plays, lectures, celebrations, and other important meetings and events back to our treasured Waterford Old School. You can now pledge online at www.waterfordfoundation.org or send us your contribution by mail. Thank you as always.

AN OLD MILL LECTURE
The Lyceum returns

Back by popular demand, Dr. Cary Gravatt will detail the history of Waterford's Old Mill at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 20. This is a repeat of one of the most well-attended and popular Lyceum meetings, which are organized by a group of local residents interested in Waterford history. Dr. Gravatt will begin with a tour of the Mill, in order to take advantage of daylight. Attendees will be able to survey the recent work done to provide access to the Mill basement. The tour will be followed by Dr. Gravatt's lecture at the John Wesley Church, across the street. Attendance is free. We hope to see you there!

Phillips Farm Site of Butterfly Count

Join the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy (LWC) on August 1 on the Phillips Farm for its thirteenth Annual Butterfly Count, centered in the Waterford area. No experience is necessary; novices will be teamed with experienced leaders in each segment of the count.

Counters will visit various locations (the Farm being one segment) that include butterfly gardens, sanctuaries, roadside wildflower and grassy areas and parks. Volunteers at this event typically count more than 2,000 butterflies on this single day and can observe up to 50 different species. The count circle stretches from White's Ferry in the east to the Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship in the west to Point of Rocks and south to Lincoln.

The LWC invites you to pack a lunch, water, and a pair of binoculars, and have fun while contributing to butterfly conservation. The count will begin at 9 a.m. For more information and to register, please contact Nicole Hamilton by email at nhamilton@loudounwildlife.org.
