Ice house gets new top
The Ice House, in the Bond Street Meadow, acquired a new
roof this month, as part of continuing maintenance of the Foundation's historic
properties. Underneath the old standing seam metal roof, a crew from Beaver
Sheet Metal found a few remaining shingles that date from one of the
structure's first coverings.
Shingles
covered the village's earliest roofs, but in the early nineteenth century, when rolling
mills were established in the United
States, the low cost, light weight, and low maintenance of tin plate made it the most common
roofing material. The metal frequently was applied on top of
existing roof materials.

Let's Raise the Roof!
Dear Friends of Waterford:
Thank you for joining us in Raising the Roof on the Old
School Auditorium!
We celebrated the reopening of the newly renovated classroom
building on the two-year anniversary of the big fire in January.
You donated almost $70,000 to our special appeal in December
for the Old School--including more than $20,000 from Foundation Board members.
Then our dear neighbor Cornelia "Neil" Keller delighted us
all with a most generous donation of $25,000 and pledge of $25,000 more. She is hoping her donation will motivate others to help return our beloved auditorium to life.
And now your contributions and grants have taken our total
to well over $400,000 towards the $1.6 million goal, to which we must add $800,000 in new
funds to start construction.
Even more exciting ... $200,000 of your contributions count
towards the $300,000 we need by May 22 to match and receive the $100,000 Cabell
Foundation grant.
So even in these tough economic times, many who miss the Old
School and are eager for the return of the cultural, educational, and social
events we enjoyed there in the past are rallying to help us Raise the Roof for
the future. We thank all the donors listed below!!!
Don't rest yet. We still need $100,000 by May 22 to meet the
Cabell Foundation grant, so join us in this exciting campaign. If you'd like to
get involved with your precious time, I encourage you to join the Foundation's Development
Committee.
Our project is "shovel ready"--all plans and permits are in
place. We just need to work together to raise the funds to Raise the Roof and
the Old School can shine again on the hill in Waterford.
Thank YOU!!

Ribbon-cutting at renovated classroom building launches capital campaign

The Raise the Roof Capital Campaign to
rebuild the Waterford Old School Auditorium began late last month with the
promising news that generous donors already have put us one-quarter of the way
toward our goal of raising $1.6 million.
On January 25, 2009, a cold but beautiful winter afternoon, the
Waterford Foundation welcomed supporters, neighbors, and officials to the newly
restored Waterford Old School classroom building.
Music from the chamber ensemble Prometheus
(prometheusce.com) resonated in the beautiful classroom spaces and off of the large
paned windows of the 1910 structure. It was a captivating reminder of the
performances the community can anticipate once construction of the auditorium
is complete and the Waterford Education and Culture Center
comes to life.
Speakers and special guests at the event included Kathleen
Kilpatrick, Director of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, Sally
Kurtz, Catoctin District Supervisor, and Cate Magennis Wyatt, our neighbor and
President of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground. Melanie Lockwood Herman,
Chair of the Waterford Foundation's Development Committee, thanked the many
contributors to the Foundation's efforts to rebuild the Old School.

"The complexity of
this project has required extraordinary collaboration and commitment of
resources," said Nancy Doane, Executive Director of the Foundation. "We are
humbled by the donation of literally hundreds of hours of time from Board
members and volunteers. We would not be where we are today without those supporters."
A member
of the Waterford Foundation Board and commercial construction executive, Hans
Hommels, has provided project management for two years on a volunteer basis. The
law firm ReedSmith has provided pro bono legal representation and William H.
Gordon and Associates has donated engineering services.
Architectural plans for reconstruction of the lost
auditorium have been completed and the required state and county government approvals
have been granted. The Foundation has been directed by its Board to have 80
percent of the needed funds in hand before ground will be broken on the
Auditorium.
