FIRE BAN
On October 4, the
Loudoun County Fire Marshall established an indefinite ban on all outdoor
fires, including campfires and pit fires, due to the extreme drought
conditions. NO OPEN FIRES are permitted at any time and violations
constitute a Class 1 misdemeanor, which carries a possible fine of $2,500
and up to one year in jail. Visitors to the Phillips Farm are reminded
that fires are not allowed on the property at any time. Current drought conditions combined with the
low water level of Catoctin Creek make Waterford
particularly vulnerable to fire at this time. Compliance with the fire
ban is essential.
Newly created access
policies for use of the Phillips Farm are in the process of being finalized and
will be posted on the Waterford Foundation's website shortly.

 Letter from the President
Thanks
to All Visitors and Volunteers - The Fair Was a Great Success!
Dear Friends of Waterford,
The sun shone and happy visitors streamed into the Waterford Fair again this year. The Waterford Fair, in its 64 year history, has become a true regional event and remains the Foundation's main fundraiser. So thank yous are very much in order to: THANK YOU to Fair chair Fran Holmbraker, her assistant Kitty Rose, Fair committees, tour house homeowners, and the hundreds of volunteers who were here to greet our thousands of visitors and crafts demonstrators. THANK YOU to our own artist, Antonia Walker, for her donation of the beautiful painting of the Old School which graced the cover of the Fair booklet, the posters, and brought in $3,000 at the silent auction on Varnishing Night at the Red Barn. THANK YOU to Chris Shipe and Loudoun Mutual Insurance for their donation of the handsome leather fire bucket that brought in close to $4,000 during the Fair raffle. THANK YOU to the fire companies to whom the Fair was dedicated. THANK YOU to Jenna Goode for her donation of the proceeds of her lemonade stand to the Rebuild the Old School Fund. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who helped and who enjoyed the Fair! It truly takes a village (and much more) to make things happen!
Rebuild the Old School Update:
While
the Old School served only as a backdrop to this year's Fair, Hans Hommels and
the Steering Committee have been busy behind the scenes working to get it ready
for next year's Fair. Quinn Evans/Architects has conducted a structural
analysis to determine the extent of damage caused by the fire and the fire
suppression efforts. QE/A has used the Secretary of the Interior's Standards of Rehabilitation in its recommendations which require repair rather than
replacement of deteriorated features wherever possible. This means, for
instance, that most of the windows would be repaired, not replaced. QA/E's
report is vital as we work through insurance issues and develop the budget for
the renovation of the Old School classroom building first, then move on to
rebuilding the auditorium. We hope to announce that insurance matters have been
resolved and the general contractor hired by the next newsletter, so work can
begin on the renovation before winter sets in. Thank
you to all our generous friends and supporters. We welcome your help and
suggestions! Please forward this newsletter to friends you think would be
interested in Waterford Foundation activities. We want to spread the word about
the good things going on in the Waterford National Historic Landmark.
