GOOD NEWS! Distinguished Architectural
Firm Hired for Old School
Dear Friends of Waterford,
I am very pleased to report that the Waterford Foundation's Board of Directors has selected the nationally-recognized architectural firm of Quinn Evans/Architects as the designer for the Rebuild the Old School project. This mid-sized firm was selected from a list of prominent architects suggested by the Old School Advisory Committee and others, and was based on Quinn Evans/Architects' long and varied experience with historic preservation. The firm has worked on many major National Landmark and historic preservation projects -- including the following:
-Eastern Market -Federal Trade Commission -Old Executive Office Building -Strathmore Hall Arts Center -Adams House Museum -Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum -Mount Vernon Treading Barn -National Museum of Natural History -The Parthenon, Nashville, Tn. -Sir Christopher Wren Building, College of William & Mary -Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historic Park -George Washington's Ferry Farm -Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site -Kennedy Center Concert Hall -Eisenhower Theater and Opera House
Bill Drewer, a principal of the firm, will personally supervise our Old School project. He has assured us that sustainable design as well as historic preservation will be key components of the firm's designs for the new auditorium. The Waterford Board believes that Quinn Evans/Architects matches well with the Foundation's goals in rebuilding the Old School auditorium and renovating the damaged classroom building. Bill Drewer has already begun meeting with members of the Old School Advisory Committee and our Board and will now be working on two concepts for our review before formal design work begins.
Stay tuned for more information about when these concepts will be presented to the community. And thanks to the Old School Steering Committee - Hans Hommels, chairman; Jim Behan, Susan Sutter, and Walter Music - for their diligent search and continued hard work on rebuilding the Old School.

MORE GOOD NEWS! County to Provide Major Funding Support for Old School Sprinkler
System
In recognition of the importance of the Waterford Old School to our community and to Loudoun County's history, the County Board of Supervisors has approved $150,000 in funding support for the purchase and installation of a new sprinkler system, including a water storage tank, in the new Old School.
This is another big step towards funding for our rebuilding project. While insurance will cover the basic costs, it will not cover our expenses for this vital fire protection system; upgrading the HVAC and electrical systems; improving performance facilities; sustainable design features, or any of the other new amenities we all want to make our new Old School a facility that will serve the community for at least another 100 years.
Thanks to Tom Edmonds, president of the Waterford Citizens' Association; Hans Hommels; and John DeCourcy, a past president of the Foundation when the Old School was purchased from the County in 1964! They all testified before the BOS about the history and value to the community of the Waterford Old School.

In Memoriam
Longtime Waterford resident and former Foundation president, Leigh Byers, died in May after a lengthy illness. Because of Leigh's many years of service to the Foundation and her active participation in the community, Leigh's family, including brother Bill Burch and sister Wilma Dillon, invite you to a celebration of Leigh's life at Wilma and Ted Dillon's on August 18 at 12:30pm. For further information, call 540-882-3018.
Thanks to all of you!
I've said thank you many times in this newsletter and I could say it a thousand more times for all the support you, our members and community, have given to the Foundation through the years and right now as we work to rebuild the Old School. We really appreciate the efforts of you all and look forward to dancing with you again in the Old School.
Please forward this newsletter to friends who would be interested in Waterford Foundation activities. Please encourage them to share email addresses with us so we may directly contact them in the future.

Buggies Back in
Waterford
Just 100 years ago Waterford was crowded with horses,
wagons, carriages, and buggies of all descriptions. Literally hundreds of
conveyances might show up for special occasions. Now, thanks to the generosity
of one of Waterford's founding families, we can again glimpse those times. In
memory of her sisters, Ms. Hannah D. Brown has donated to the Foundation four
buggies that have been on her nearby farm Oakland since the turn of the
last century. They include a two-wheel gig, a "spider" (with a seat for the
driver behind the passengers), and one that still faintly sports the
family crest. With a good cleaning, fresh paint, and a few repairs, they will
be ready to grace Waterford once again for many more years. (Anyone interested
in assisting the restoration should email info@waterfordva.org) In the process
we will, of course, be mindful of the town order of 1907 "to abate the nuisance
of washing buggies on the street."
