The 64th Annual Waterford Homes Tour and Crafts Exhibit:
October 5, 6, 7, 2007

Dear Friends of Waterford,

I bring you greetings as new president of the Waterford Foundation and from our other new officers - Nancy Doane, vice president; Susan Sutter, secretary; and Mark Beisler, treasurer.

Our main goal this year is, of course, to rebuild the Old School so it is again a symbol of Waterford's long history and promising future. Hans Hommels is heading up our Steering Committee which has been meeting regularly to plan first, for renovating the Old School Classroom Building (we hope to have it ready for this fall's Fair!), and then begin the more complex rebuilding of the Auditorium Building.

We invite you to be part of it all! Come to the Waterford Old School Public Forum on Sunday, May 20 at 2:00 pm at Waterford Elementary School. Bring your old photos and videos of events you celebrated at the Old School before the fire, and bring your ideas for rebuilding it anew. This will be a chance for all of us to share memories and add our thoughts to the plans for making our beloved Old School an even better center for parties, community meetings, and wonderful cultural events.

Until the Old School Auditorium stands again, join us this for the Waterford Foundation Concert Series at the Lucketts Community Center. This Sunday, May 6, world famous pianist Leon Bates and the Grammy nominated Borealis Wind Quintet will celebrate French music. On Monday, Mr. Bates will give students and teachers at Waterford Elementary School a piano concert - courtesy of the Waterford Concert Series. You can still get tickets to Sunday's concert by calling the office (540-882-3018) or at the door. You can go to www.waterfordva.org for information.

Making music is not all we do. If you are looking for a way to meet new friends and help us protect the Waterford National Historic Landmark at the same time, join a committee! Preserve our historic buildings with Rich Biby (Properties Planning and Management); share our history and culture with Sherry Satin (Education); protect our open spaces with Ann Goode and Patti Psaris (Land Use); and find ways to pay for it all with Marilyn Gentry (Development).

Thank you to all our generous friends and supporters. We welcome your help and suggestions!

Kathleen Hughes
President

Sunday, May 6, 4pm
Lucketts Community Center

The world famous pianist Leon Bates and the Grammy nominated Borealis Wind Quintet will perform together on Sunday, May 6, 4 PM, in the second concert of the 2007 Waterford Concert Series. Due to fire, which destroyed the Waterford Old School auditorium on January 25, 2007, the concert will be held in the Lucketts Community Center, 8 miles north of Leesburg on Route 15.

Leon Bates

Leon Bates has wowed audiences in major concert halls all over the USA and abroad, gaining top reviews. The New York Times called him "an elegant player, with a keen ear for color, and a flair for poetry." His annual schedule includes about 100 concerts, TV appearances, recordings, and as many as 50 programs in schools to bring classical music to young people. Elementary and high school students are  mesmerized by Mr. Bates's  energy, discipline and physique: Every day he practices piano for 6-7 hours and bench presses over 300 lbs. On Monday, May 7, students and teachers at Waterford Elementary School will learn how piano playing and pumping iron can go together.

Members of the Borealis Wind Quintet are noted for their rapport, lively effervescent style, and skillful playing, winning them prestigious grants, awards and a 2006 Grammy nomination for their CD, A La Carte-Short Works For Winds. Reviews from across the country praise Borealis for music that is "the very best of chamber playing," "sensitive" and "scintillating."

quintet

For their May 6
Waterford concert in Lucketts, Leon Bates and the Borealis Wind Quintet will celebrate French music, beginning with short works by Deslandres and Rameau (Borealis); then pieces by Roussel and D'Indy for piano and wind quintet; followed by a Ravel piano solo; and finishing with Poulenc's delightful Sextet for Piano and Winds.

The Loudoun Mutual Insurance Company is sponsor of this concert.

Call 540 882-3018 or go to www.waterfordva.org for information. Seating is limited. Advance ticket purchase recommended.

Support for the 2007 Waterford Concert Series will help rebuild the Waterford Old School auditorium. Now in its 13th season, the concert series is a program of the Waterford Foundation.

The Waterford Concert Series contributes to the larger work of the Foundation, which is dedicated to education and to the preservation of the historic buildings and open spaces of the Waterford National Historic Landmark District. The Waterford Foundation is supported through grants, contributions, and proceeds from the annual Waterford Homes Tour and Crafts Exhibit in October.
