TURN YOUR MIDLIFE CRISIS INTO YOUR CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT!
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM THE QUEEN'S COUNSEL
Ever since I first introduced The Queen as a helpful archetype for midlife women, I have received hundreds of requests for detailed instructions on how to become a Queen.
The reality is that I cannot possibly know how anyone else will attain her Queendom, I only know how I came into mine, and that is largely through hindsight. The truth, my truth, at least, is that there is no one true truth. We must each find our own way in this world.
When you come to me for help and spiritual guidance, I listen to your concerns and embrace your needs. I pat you on the back, give you a good, swift kick in the butt, or let you cry on my shoulder, as needed. I can tell you what I did in such and such situation, how I did it, what I learned from this or that lesson, but I cannot tell you what you should do. How do I know what your soul needs?
Only you know what you know. I can, of course, aid you in reaching into the well of your own deepest wisdom, and help you to hear the messages from your best inner Self. And I can offer tools and practices to help you develop the confidence to follow your own purpose, path, passion and power.
A woman who I have been working with recently told me that I had changed her life. "Well, no, of course, I didn't, honey," I assured her. "You changed your own life." The fact of the matter remains that I could not give her what was not already hers.

Hail Queens!
The current War on Women being waged by conservative right wing fundamentalists here in America and around the world may just be a blessing in disguise.
We were asleep at the wheel, complacent - not paying attention, not realizing the precariousness of our position as so-called equal citizens. We were focused on matters closer to hand and missed the dangerous big picture.
B R R R R I I I I I I I I I N N N N G G!
This draconian crackdown on the rights of women is a wake up call, LOUD AND CLEAR.
The last issue of The Queen's Chronicles focused on the many outrages imposed on women today, and the many more outrageous ones that have been proposed as laws.
This topic obviously touched a nerve in all of us. The response from our readers was overwhelming and unprecedented, not to mention intelligent, articulate, and irate.
This is a great beginning! Realization and rage is the first step. We are shaking off our blinders and taking a stand. Watch out world - we Queens are preparing to defend ourselves and each other. We are gearing up to claim and use our formidable power to make some desperately needed changes in the attitudes and actions of society.
"The suffragettes refused to be polite in demanding what they wanted or grateful for getting was they deserved."
- Anna Quindlen
So, my dear, honorable sister Queens, I am turning over this entire issue to you. All of the content herein has been written or contributed by our International Court of Kick Ass Queens.™ All hail!

The Queen's Court is a gathering of sovereign women of a certain age - our dear peers - who graciously offer information, guidance, inspiration and encouragement to each other.
We Queens know what we know. And we know a great deal. Our experience has made us wise. So, feel free to consult with our cyber council/counsel when you are need of sage advice or wish to explore a particular topic of interest. In the flurry of responses to the last issue about The War on Women, I opened the discussion to the Queens on The Queen of My Self Facebook page. These are just a few of the many, many comments: Q. I am furious about all the attempts by states around the country to repeal or limit the rights of women and to impose new draconian mandates of repression that are not only humiliating, but dangerous. Are you mad yet? A. Hell yes! - Joanne, MA A. Angry isn't the right word here!!! - Cathy, VA A. Furious is more like it!! - Dana, WA A. Beyond pissed! - Fran, MI A. OUTRAGE!!!!!!! Where's the OUTRAGE button!!! - Phyllis, NY A. Our vaginas must be pretty darn powerful. Otherwise they wouldn't be so afraid of them and feel such a need to control them. Any men I know who are secure in their sexuality and self-worth have no need to control women. They like us to be powerful equals. My husband is one of those "real" men. - Laura, TX Q. The abuses keep coming. The latest outrages against women: A new law proposed in Arizona would allow an employer to fire a woman for using birth control. And an Alaskan proposal that a woman be criminalized if she receives an abortion w/out the written consent of the man who impregnated her. A. Hmmm. Does the law also require that all impregnators sign a written contract agreeing to financially support a child through adulthood if the woman doesn't want an abortion? Bet not. - Charlene, OH A. Well they better find a way for the man to carry the baby for nine months and give birth. What I just said is just as crazy as the proposal. I don't know why men are coming down on women all of a sudden. Women should start making proposals for men. There should be a proposal that any man that impregnated an woman must feed, house, pay for all doctor bills and put that child and mother through college. If they can't pay they go to jail for the length of time it takes the child to grow up and make it through college. Keep it in your pants or go to jail. - Patti, OH A. Apparently they are following The Handmaid's Tale handbook of how to suppress woman. - Sandra, NY A. Exactly. In this column I wrote about The Handmaid's Tale in connection with this War on Women. - QMD Q. More outrage: Wisconsin just repealed the Equal Pay Act for Women because "money is more important for men because they have families to support." A. I've supported my family on my own (with occasional help from mom and dad) for over 10 years. The kids' father was sporadic in his help and can't manage to hold a job for more than a year. Back support? $10,000+. Sheesh. - Sharon, MA A. Women have families to support too. A lot of them are single moms. That isn't right and it isn't fair to women who do the same work that a man does. Some women have a husband who was injured in the war or is very sick and she has to support the family. Some men left their women and children and the women have to support the family. I am so tired of women being treated like second class citizens. - Patti, OH A. Unbelievable! How can this be happening?! - Cyndi, TX Q. It is happening, because we stopped paying attention. We took our rights for granted. We were not vigilant and proactive. But more to the point - what are we going to do about it? What are you doing to protest this war against women? Please share your ideas, actions, and tactics. A. Its a scary thing that we are regressing so much here in the US. Girls we need to pull back out of this. - Hope, NV A. I sign petitions all the time and actually love to lobby with Planned Parenthood and NARAL. I love our local pro-choice politicians. My son just reread The Scarlett Letter, and now I am doing a new series based on model drawings with the "A." Stands for Abortion these days. There is such a thing as abortion stigma. I make little beaded A's to wear, too. - Reynolds, NY A. AHA! Just when I thought it couldn't get weirder. The only suggestion I have is to VOTE. Make sure that you and every like minded person you know VOTES!!! And especially IMPORTANT- the voter registration rules HAVE CHANGED, so REGISTER EARLY and you know the rest. -L.A., PA A. So worrying seeing the trend that is creeping into America and its politics it is of concern to us all. I will try to raise some awareness over here in the U.K. - Hanna, England A. I am outraged by these new laws. Will spread the word here. - Christine, MI A. First I'll send this to my daughter in Arizona and her friends at Prescott College, since young activists scream loudly!!! And since I (and a flight attendant) accidentally spilled cranberry juice on Jon Kyl last year, I'll send him an apology and a plea...! - Beverly, CT A. I can't take much more of this, I swear. - Beth, NY
Thanks all for spreading the word. The first step is to talk. Talk to your friends and the check out clerk in the store and mail person. Talk to everybody. Spread the outrage. And please send in your ideas and efforts on behalf of Women's Rights. I would love to continue this thread of discussion. Please send your ideas, opinions and personal experiences about any aspect of women and power. Please send your questions or responses to: [email protected] Your letters will be printed in the next Queen's Chronicles. |
I am not sure about other newspapers where you live, but this was shared with me. You may have seen it already. We are going backwards in time. Newsday (here in NY) has begun to censor what is fit for the public to read. You did not see these Doonesbury strips in Newsday. Less controversial pieces were substituted.

Dedicated to Our Great Work in the world,
and The Cosmic Cowgirls
We are a tribe of truth tellers.
Revolution makers.
Movers and shakers
of things that need moving
and shaking. Like hips.
And old ideas that need
shaking off.
We are a gathering of women who
straddle the worlds.
We have one bare foot on the earth? (toenails painted sparkly of course)
and one cowgirl boot in the marketplace of life.
With our heads in the stars for big dreaming
and our arms outstretched
to embrace as much aliveness as we can.
We have our hearts on our sleeves, both of them.
Whether we be sinners or saints
or wear halos or horns there is
one thing you have to admit about us....
We agree...
Be the most you that you can be.
Be your own revolution
while being a part of the collective one.
We believe this truth to be self evident:
That each woman can transform
her life into a legend.
That stories are made for telling
around the campfire,
but legends are meant to be lived.
And sisterhoods are meant to
be your bridge when you don't know
the way over the troubled water of
the lies you have been told
and tell yourself still.
To help in the great adventure
of revealing the more you that there is,
we may hand you a paintbrush
a writing pen a drum a fiddle
a magic wand a bar of chocolate
some cowgirl boots and
a jar of red glitter and a ball of
red thread. And the craft of
inquiry. That's right - the path
of questions is that path
each of us must walk and keep
on walking. Creativity, curiosity
and? inquiry into oneself is the daily
cup of tea here.
Here we know what women
are worth and we tell you what we
know of our ancient and future wisdom.
We have been gathering the stories
of our grandmothers and grandfathers
about birth and death and transformation
that have been lost. We will not
allow them to be lost again. We
are carrying scrolls of wisdom
across the planet so that thousands
of hands hold these legends
and it will not be lost from us
like it was before.
This is where women
come to gather the bones
and sing their whole self
back together again.
We believe there is medicine,
sacred and true in
community that comes with the
territory of belonging.
Of being a part of that which
is bigger then you. And me.
A place where the collective
soul can unfurl her bright
wings and together we can
fly in a future that reflects
who we are and what we
care about.
And in closing I must give you a
Warning - if you enter
Cosmic Cowgirl Territory
there is no way your wild
woman will keep herself
contained. Beware of shifting
stories and old ideas falling away.
Beware of taking up space
that might make others
uncomfortable around you.
Beware of no longer being
willing to live a life that does not reflect
who you are. This is dangerous
territory. Welcome.
Your cup of revolutionary tea
is waiting for you.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to The Queen's Chronicles.
Please keep your comments coming. And do feel free to make suggestions about content you would like to see. Or anything else, for that matter. It is a joy to connect with you.
Letters In Response to the March 2012 Issue:
You are so right, Donna. I especially loved Eve Ensler's new monologue. I hear that the women representatives of both parties at the state and federal level, are truly fighting back. They are pushing sarcastic new measures on Viagra and sonograms, on Violence Against Women, and rape. We are in Greece but I am following it all on the Internet. Maybe this is what we needed, an all out attack, so we can unify our efforts and bring about changes that are real.
- Charoula, Greece
These attacks on women are infuriating! Especially the idea that a fetus seems to be much better protected than a child does. I am concerned for the well being of the unwanted children, what will become of them? I have seen no plan put forward for this. I feel that a part of the reason for this reckless behavior could be that these politicians see their way of life as being threatened, and as has been done many times before, they take their frustrations out on women. Which strategy (since more than half of the voters are women) would seem -ah what's the word? -nonsensical. So what happens if all of the women in the workforce go home and become housewives? Oh yeah, they can send those jobs to India, China, and wherever wages are low and benefits are nonexistent, hence more profits. What I cannot understand, or even see a reason for, is why the people who would be most hurt by social conservatism are often its biggest supporters? Why would any woman be for such repressive legislation?
- Lorraine, PA
I resisted reading what I thought would be an ardent feminist rant. But when I read about how men (clearly afraid of women) act like legislative Darth Vaders, it's clear that sounding the alarm bell is a case of right action. That said, social change is never as potent in the long run, as individuals changing their own polarized, tormented minds. A real cure for what ails this planet, from hate crimes to gender wars, to environmental assault, is within each of us. The fractured human psyche shows up in the world out there. Thanks, however, for clanging those wake up bells.
- Lori, BC, Canada
Thank you, Donna, for pointing out these current practices - they aren't even about 'a time back in history.' They are unbelievably now. In the past, women have come through and got a 'better deal'. I guess these latest issues aren't likely to be the last. We have to keep chipping away, being forever vigilant and aware. I think if we stick together and support each other it is already healing and nurturing. If we stand together against these and other practices we will help everyone. Well done, Donna, for speaking out. - Margaret, England
I loved this issue of The Queen's Chronicles - I don't know why there isn't more of a public outcry!
- Asari, NY
Love this issue! I agree with you. "Off with their heads!" Time for women to boycott -no contraceptives, no sex! Legislation needs to be applied to men who use Viagara!!!
- Linda, SC
Dear MAD Queen,
Wonderful Chronicles. I will forward and share. Thank you.
- Elaine, MO
Thank you for your insights on women's issues - really necessary!
- Juliana, NY
I am so glad to see your smiling face, for the first time, albeit in an email! Love it! Yummy and informative newsletter too.
- Verena, NJ
Thank you for your beautifully written outrage over all the insane misogynistic vile attacks that are being spewed against women in the USA and elsewhere around the globe. Thanks for including Eve Ensler's powerful poem about rape and BEING DONE WITH IT, and also Maya Angelou's fabulous poem, and all the other write ups you included about this scary and important issue. Your words and theirs struck a resonant chord with me. Here's to speaking truth to power! Love and many, many blessings,
- Queen Mary Immaculate, CO
You Rock. Today's Chronicles was the best one ever. And thank you for being such an inspiration for today's girls/tomorrow's women!
- Lyn, Director, Lower East Side Girls Club, NY
My financial support of the wonderful much needed work you do is long overdue. Wish it could be more, but am doing what I can. Thank you!!!
- Adeline, CA
This is a very good newsletter, though I am not so much angry at the incomprehensible surge of misogyny as I am sad and confused by it. I have been reading Mary Ayers' Masculine Shame which discusses at length the degree to which patriarchal values make men ashamed of themselves, in particular their bodies and sexuality. The heroic impulse, however, prevents them from acknowledging what they experience as helplessness to Nature itself, and so they project their shame on women, seeking to control and shame us instead (hence the "slut" remarks). Thankfully, there are increasing numbers of men who are willing to see themselves as fallible and human, and they lovingly embrace their own feminine within themselves, as well as the women in their lives. To these men I give my deepest gratitude. And I give you my love, rather than give the others my ire...
- Carol, NY
THANK YOU! Not only for including our ad, but especially for your ever-powerful Chronicles that are so clear and compelling.
- Queen Mary Beth, CA
Another over the top issue! I loved especially Maya Angelou's poem "Still I Rise." I'm especially enamored of the lines "Does it come as a surprise/That I dance like I've got diamonds/At the meeting of my thighs?" Keep up your wonderful work!
- Karen, NJ
Amen or should I say "A (women)" - a thousand times over. I am so angry these days because of all this misogynistic policy-making, I can barely even type. Arrrrgggghhhh!!!!
- Beth, WA
I am always excited to receive your email newsletters and when they arrive I read from top to bottom.
- Perizad, NY
A Couple of Responses from the article "Hell Hath No Fury Like Women Scorned" on the Huffington Post:
Donna Henes has every right to be angry, and she explains why effectively. The climate change that the Republicans don't believe in mirrors the severe 'climate change' they've promulgated over women's issues this election season: they don't believe that will have any effect, either. But bashing women for sport is at least as unsavory as dog-fighting, and we know what happened to Michael Vick around that. Republicans have a deaf ear to the outrage their new slew of legislation has provoked, and it would take disaster for them at the polls in November - nationwide - to get their attention. Women and their supporters cross all party lines, live in every state. The time is now. Use this anger and direct it toward them that gave all of us this headache by removing the sorry fellows (and the few conservative women who hew to their work) from their easy chairs. The time is now.
- myth1958
Thank you for an excellent summation of facts I have been trying to get across the various threads for the last few months. I am an angry middle-aged woman who is watching the Christians force their rigid belief system on me and other women through archaic legislation. Keep fighting the fight with us! We shall not go silent into that good night...
- PCR
Please send your responses to [email protected].

Fifteen years of loving and living together is sufficient proof of our faith in each other and the honor in our union. But Gay rights are civil rights. And we are glad to so. It is a joy and a privilege to share in the fortune of another woman. I recently heard Oprah say the saddest thing ever - "The hardest thing about being successful is having someone to be glad for you."
It takes a centered and confident Queen to break that pattern. There are 60 million thrones out there. One for each of us. There is plenty of purpose, passion and power for us all. May we use it well! |

Prayer requests: I am about halfway through a 4-month regimen of chemo for Stage 2 breast cancer that was diagnosed last October. (Had 2 surgeries and very many consultations & scans first, then started chemo in early February and should finish in late May.) The prognosis is good, but I have to admit, chemo is starting to kick my butt. I have tried throughout this process to keep a positive outlook and be grateful things aren't "worse" than they are. But with each subsequent treatment (it really is "worse than the disease!") that gets a bit more challenging. So any of you who are inclined to send healing thoughts, distance Reiki, prayers, spells, or whatever - it would be very much appreciated. I know this is a powerful group of women, and appreciate any strength and healing you may be inclined to share on my behalf. Peace and blessings, - Kim, NY Please send your requests for physical and spiritual healing and positive energy so that the powerful women of The Queen's Court might send their prayers and blessings to you in your time of need. |
NEW YORK
I would like to add my thoughts on Women and Power because it is at the center of what I believe in, teach, and ultimately pass on to other feminine beauties like myself.
I am a woman nearing sixty, joyous in approaching the big 6-0. I've been living in the Catskills of the Hudson Valley for almost eight years now, and the changes I've gone through while living here have been remarkable. I moved up here from New Jersey after escaping the rat race of society, which had in those last few weeks made me ill and unable to function.
Exit the well-known, secure and comfortable routine, enter a new world of discoveries! Let me tell you, being a Taurus, moving into the unknown was a scary thing. Letting go of all that security and money was against my nature. But as I went through menopause, I knew that it was time for a change in my life, so I let it go, watching it slip away with great trepidation and anxiety.
What came as a result of this new path was the truth. That in releasing, and letting go of that which binds you, you find a great freedom that gives you exactly what you want!
Trusting in what will be - letting myself be guided through observation, recognizing the signs, and acting on them - was a great life lesson, and as I came into my post-menopausal years. The surge of self-discovery and spiritual fulfillment was met with amazing results here in the Catskills.
As I found a great resource that helped me grow into my feminine skin with newly discovered power, I began to feel the urge to pass this on. I was going to teach a belly dance class. And not just any belly dance - the most earthy, steeped in ethnic flavor kind of belly dance I had found and adored - American Tribal Style belly dance, a fusion of ethnic and ancient dances.
These dances were used in childbirth, ceremonial blessings for the tribe, and the celebration of rites of passage. They were borne out of matriarchal societies and were used for honoring the Divine Mother, Mother Earth, and the Goddesses whom they prayed to.
I currently have a solid "student" dance troupe that consists of women whose age averages around 55, many of them crying out for release from the social bonds that have tied them to a life that was suppressed. Some have devoted all their time and energy to raising their children and now find themselves in an "empty nest", directionless and confused.
Others have found themselves divorced or widowed, with their identity lost from years of living in the shadows. A lot of these women have gone through their changes, reclaiming the blood that they had sacrificed for years, yet they feel a longing or loss of that which was severed. The search for something fulfilling that will help them get fit and feed their spirits, is what led them to my classes.
This art form truly speaks to the heart of these women. They embrace it more fully because it truly brings out the joy and passion of femininity. Through the process of releasing stiffness and rigidity and becoming flowing and fluid in movement, they discover the great power they hold inside. This is an amazing discovery to most of them, and a life changing awareness that literally opens up their heart and allows them to embrace themselves in love and acceptance.
And with this comes great power - power to be who we truly are, to walk in confidence and grace, to find focus and balance as we move into reclaiming ourselves as feminine creatures. There are no excuses here, no apologies for being what nature meant for us to be. The power of this dance is quintessential to the feminine spirit. Once we discover this, the rest will follow.
Belly blessings to all!
