Greetings! Little did I know back in the 60's when my Ole Dad was strumming his sweet Gibson to "The Marvelous Toy" all those many years ago that we'd be singing harmony with Tom Paxton, it's author, on that very same song on a sunny February day for nearly a thousand children in the beautiful community-built Events Center at the top of the hill overlooking the Pacific ocean in Florence, Oregon, forty years later. Thanks for the initiation, Dad!
The children studied Paxton's songs for weeks with their volunteer music teacher, Pamela and they knew every word by heart, pantomiming like pros through the choruses as Tom peeled through "Goin' to the Zoo", "Allen Gator" and "The Pizza Who Ate Chicago" and "The Marvelous Toy". Three colorful 30-foot tall backdrops hung behind Tom, Steve & me onstage, chock-filled with artistic characters drawn by the children playing out the stories from these songs. What a sight! The sound in our ears of hundreds of promising young voices singing along with us was a gift to remember. The singing future filled our ears with joy, fun and promise. We were moved by that beautiful sound and will bring it to mind when we wonder what the future holds.
Two more shows in Portland the following day packed a total of five show into three days. Providing backup for folk hero, Tom Paxton, was a labor of love. Highlights brought new friendships into our life with Barry McGuire and Mari, and John York and Sumi who were full of goodhearted stories and a love for life and sharing their music that inspired us even more. Thanks to all our fans who came to the shows and reminded us how much they love this music and still want to hear more from us. :o) We happily answer the call as we return to what we do best. Singing and teaching, drawing and writing our way around the Pacific Northwest, here at home in Portland and around the countryside. Even with its challenges, it is a rewarding way to live our lives and we are enriched by the friendships we share along the way.
Winterfolk at the Aladdin Theatre for Sisters of the Road is next Saturday, February 7th. We are honored to be in the lineup this year along with Rosalie Sorrels and many of Portland's finest folk artists. Get your tickets for this community highlight of the year! See you there :o)
We'll be touring north in February to Seattle, Victoria, Bellingham & Olympia for shows and house concerts. Check our calendar for a concert near you.
If you are interested in hosting a house concert for us, we would love to talk with you. Email us or call anytime. We will give you all the info you need to have a fun community gathering with our music in concert! Thanks for sharing the road with us. - Kate & Steve
