"The way to get in with a cat is to treat it as an equal ~ or even better, as the superior it knows itself to be."

Kitten and Cat Care Seminar

In our upcoming series of client education seminars
 we will be discussing:

Cat&Kitten

Kitten and Cat Care
Join us April 23rd 6:00 pm at the
Scottsdale Civic Center Library, Silver Room.

Your kitten will experience many changes over a lifetime, but just like babies, your kitten's first year is crucial for a lifetime of good health.  He needs to have the best possible nutrition and one important way to keep your cat healthy through his lifetime is through diet.  We will walk you through the ever-changing dietary and nutritional needs, as well as other necessities including testing and vaccinations.

All cats, even indoor pets, need to be vaccinated as some viruses travel through the air.  We will also explain the importance of neutering and spaying.  You will learn  the best time to do it is and how it can positively impact your cat's health.  Other topics discussed will include exercise and declawing.  We are looking forward to seeing you there.  Snacks and refreshments will be available.

It's A Good Thing

Cheetah Conservation Fund's 5th Annual
Run For The Cheetah

The Scottsdale Cat Clinic is proud to be sponsoring the 5th Annual Run for the Cheetah on April 25th!

Cheetah's can run 75 mph in 30 seconds!  Don't let that time discourage you and come join Dr. Karnia and the rest of the staff at Papago Park by the Phoenix Zoo.  Also, join our team and show your spirit with a contribution to the mission and receive a free T-shirt.  The race will include a 5K run/walk, 1-mile walk, and a kid's dash.

The run is a fun event designed to raise awareness about the endangered cheetah and to raise funds to support the Cheetah Conservation Fund's programs. CCF's mission is "to secure habitats for the long-term survival of the cheetah and their ecosystem through multidiscipline and integrated programs of conservation, research and education."

Registration begins at 6:30 am.  Help us have some fun, running or walking, and enjoy the picturesque views the zoo has to offer all at the same time.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Meet Mister, our weight loss champ!

 Mister
This past July we rolled out the Weight Loss Challenge to all of our scale-tipping kitties.  With the help of their owners and a modified diet, most of these kitties successfully shrunk a size or two.

Mister, a handsome 4 year old tuxedo kitty, came to us in July with complaints from his owner, Casey, that he was eating too fast and it was causing him to vomit.  He weighed in at 13.6 pounds and after examining Mister Dr. Karnia graded him as a 7 of 9 on the body condition scoring system.  A healthy cat should be at 5, so Mister was carrying too many pounds.  Casey told us Mister was eating a generic wet food, so Dr. Karnia suggested we decrease his food intake and switched him over to prescription Purina Overweight Management.

At Mister's follow-up appointment in September, he was no longer vomiting and had already lost a little weight!  Casey was very relieved and continued on with the doctors recommended diet.  In December, Mister had lost 2.35 lbs and won our weight loss challenge based on losing over 17% of his weight.

No more vomiting and looking leaner than ever, Casey is helping Mister live a longer and healthier life.

"I can't believe Mister finally lost weight, he's healthier
and more playful."
  ~ Casey Guttman

Obesity in cats is a common disease often overlooked by pet owners.  A surprising number of other diseases stem from feline obesity, such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and hepatic lipidosis (a severe liver disease).  If your cat has a few extra ounces, we can prescribe a diet program that well safely get her back in shape.

~ Honorable mention goes out to Teisha Reeves
who lost 7lbs and 40% body weight over the course of a year.  Way to go Teisha!

It is very important to have your cat's weight loss monitored by a veterinarian. Too rapid of weight loss can lead to health complications.

Heidi's Extreme Dental Makeover

If you read our newsletters, receive our emails, browse our blog or have brought your cat to the Scottsdale Cat Clinic, you have probably read or seen multiple articles toting how important dental cleanings are for your cat.  Enough already, right?!  Not for Heidi, a 13 and year old black short hair kitty whose quality of life was drastically improved overnight.

~ Heidi's sticking her
   tongue out at us!

Heidi's owner, Michelle, goes above and beyond taking quality care of her four cats.  She knew Heidi needed a cleaning, but was unaware how severe the problem had become.  Heidi was still eating her mixture of hard and soft food okay although she was suffering from severe gingivitis and dental tartar causing her pain.  Despite the discomfort, most cats will continue to eat, showing very little outward signs of distress.

In preparing for the dental procedure, Dr. Karnia and her staff took the necessary x-rays of Heidi's teeth showing any hidden problems.  Radiographs allow us to see problems below the gum line to the root of the tooth.  Problems that are not visible without x-rays eventually will become visible problems.  But by then they will have caused more damage, more pain and may require more expensive treatments to correct.

During Heidi's surgery Dr. Karnia surgically extracted nine teeth that were already compromised or would lead to further infection and pain.  At home later that same evening, Heidi was noticeably feeling much better and already eating! It was obvious that Heidi's teeth must have caused her so much pain that even with having nine extractions that day she was already eating and even purring.  Michelle said, "Heidi acts like a kitten again and plays all the time, it was the best thing I could have done for her."  We are very happy to hear that.

"Heidi is doing great after her surgery, she is more active than she has been in years and does not stop purring.  She is like a brand new cat!"    ~Michelle

~ For the most effective prevention of dental disease please have your cat's teeth and gums evaluated by a veterinarian every 6 months. ~
