From the President
A Community of Businesses
I had the opportunity to speak before the Neponset Valley Sunrise Rotary Club recently, and it reminded me why I enjoy what I get to do everyday. As a former Rotarian I am very familiar with the role that clubs like Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions and others play in our society. However, hearing of the activities of the NVSRC (and last month the Canton Rotary) brought back just how important and impactful these organizations are to our communities. Many of these clubs today are unfortunately rather small (10 - 50 members) yet they are a great example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. From pancake breakfasts to duck races, to community auctions their activities bring people together and raise money for the neediest of the needy right in our backyards. And of course they do it all as volunteers.
It's no coincidence that many members of these service clubs are also members of the Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce. For we too are a community organization. In fact, we are a community of businesses. Businesses that are no doubt interested in building and growing their business, but also interested in supporting their local community.
Consequently, I am very pleased to share two new community-minded initiatives we recently began here at the NVCC. Our Board of Directors has agreed that for each of our major events (Golf Outing, Flavors of the Neponset Valley, Annual Meeting) we will partner with a local non-profit organization in order to provide some component of giving back as part of the event. For example, Flavors is all about food, so we may host a food drive in conjunction with that event. At another event, it could be a clothing drive or like our Golf Outing last year and this year it is simply a cash donation to a deserving organization. Of course we are not the United Way, in fact we too are a non-profit, but we recognize that we can still contribute time, money, or other resources regularly. I do hope that you will support us in those efforts.
The other way we can help our local non-profits is through our new online Community Calendar. If you go to the Calendar section of nvcc.com you will find a link to the Community Calendar on the right hand side of the page. Here, local non-profits can submit their own events (at no cost) directly onto the website to be viewed by the entire community. Since non-profits are one of the largest sectors of members we have, we are very pleased to offer this service. We hope you will check it often to see what's happening.
As a member of the NVCC you are a part of a local "Community of Businesses" that supports each other and supports the important organizations that make our communities as strong and vibrant as they are. Go ahead, give yourself a pat on the back!

The Last Hurrah for Norwood High School
Recognizing that many NVCC members may have attended Norwood High School we wanted to share the following information with you about the upcoming farewell event for the old high school.
Additionally, Chamber members have been asked to serve as guest bartenders for the evening. I plan to do this myself and invite any other Norwood High grads to join me. Your admission is free and you will be serving just beer and wine for a two hour shift. It's a great way to see people, enjoy the evening and get the Chamber's name out there in a positive way.
The proceeds from the event, as well as from the souvenir items that will be offered, will go to help build the concession stand that was not in the plans to be rebuilt with the new school.
