From the President
Although it's 45 degrees and raining as I write this, the calendar says it's Spring. So while it may not feel like it yet, there are indeed abundant signs of new life that confirm what the calendar says. Just look around at the forsythia, tulips and daffodils that have blossomed all over. I'm growing lettuce and other greens in my garden and will soon add tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and more. Local spring sports teams are in action and even the Red Sox seem to have finally figured out that a new season has begun.
Spring is the season that brings new life in so many ways. It also brings new life to activities here at the Chamber. Later this month we will hold our first-ever Legislative Reception at the Endicott Estate in Dedham. The objective of the event is to help build stronger connections between our area leaders and the business community. There is no speaking agenda, rather the idea is to have everyone mix and mingle and share conversation.
The Endicott Estate is a beautiful and historic venue for this special occasion which will include hors d oeuvres, complimentary beer, wine and refreshments.
As the leading economic development and business advocacy organization in the region, it is important to us to build and maintain positive relations with our region's decision makers. This is your opportunity to meet those decision makers and share your thoughts and concerns.
Just this week the Chamber staff switched to a new database management system. Now you may be thinking "big deal how does that impact me?" Well believe it or not it actually does. Our new system is integrated with our website which means many new features for you as a member. You will soon be receiving your own personal login credentials for the site which will allow you to manage your membership information and preferences. Change your address or hire a new employee? Now you can update your information on the website in real time. Want to attend an event? Sign up online as always in a more efficient and secure manner. Prefer to receive your invoices electronically? No problem, our system allows you to view and pay your invoices from your web portal. We will even be able to tell you how many times your company or your industry was searched for and clicked on through our website, providing you with real metrics regarding the value of your membership.
Of course this new system also allows the Chamber staff to operate more efficiently consequently allowing us more time to service your needs in the business community.
The bottom line on this is that we are leveraging technology to provide you a better member experience while streamlining our back office operations. I look forward to your comments as we roll out this new system in the coming weeks.
So that's just a little of what's new here as we look forward to warmer weather. What's new with you?

The Last Hurrah for Norwood High School
Recognizing that many NVCC members may have attended Norwood High School we wanted to share the following information with you about the upcoming farewell event for the old high school.
Additionally, Chamber members have been asked to serve as guest bartenders for the evening. I plan to do this myself and invite any other Norwood High grads to join me. Your admission is free and you will be serving just beer and wine for a two hour shift. It's a great way to see people, enjoy the evening and get the Chamber's name out there in a positive way.
Before they demolish the existing building, built in 1926, the Norwood High School Alumni Association felt it would be fitting to say good-bye to the current building by offering tours, and a moving and memorable day of history, current activities, a memorial to those graduates who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and just a gathering of friends to pay tribute to the classrooms and halls that educated so many of us.
The event is in two parts, a day program that is free, and an evening gala on a grander scale which is the main fund raising event. The proceeds from the ticketed evening event, as well as from the souvenir items that will be offered, will go to help build the concession stand/field house that was not in the plans to be rebuilt with the new school. This concession stand is a great asset to the many sports boosters that, due to economic times, need to sell food and drinks at games or music competitions and exhibitions to support their organizations.

Legislative Reception at the Endicott Estate
Business people from the Neponset Valley are invited to attend the first Legislative Reception held by the Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 from 5:30-8:00 pm. The event will be held at the historic Endicott Estate in Dedham, MA.
Local and state elected and appointed officials from the region have been invited to come meet the local business community. The legislative reception is an opportunity to facilitate dialogue between our local and state leaders and the business community in order to create a better understanding of the issues that impact business.
"Business people often feel that their voice is not heard at town hall or on Beacon Hill. At the same time, local and state officials say that they want to hear from the business community. This meeting allows both groups to get together in a relaxed setting to discuss their respective agendas in person," said Chamber President, Tom O'Rourke.
There is no formal speaking program, instead participants will be able to mix and mingle with one another while enjoying hors de oeuvres, beer, wine and refreshments.
