From the Membership Front Lines |
Brian McGillicuddy
Director of Membership
This past week I was contacted by a business interested in becoming a member. When I asked how they heard about the NVCC, I was told she spoke with "someone" (an NVCC member but couldn't remember his name) at the Business Expo. This "someone" did such a terrific job explaining the benefits of participating in a REN (Referral Exchange Network) Group that she was calling to join. WOW!! Does any other Chamber have better members than the NVCC? I think not. Remember: If your referral becomes an NVCC member you receive $25 in Chamber Dollars. So, be sure to let me know if you send someone my way. Thanks so much to all of you for your efforts in helping to grow the NVCC.

10th Annual Flavors of Neponset Valley |

Our elegant soiree will be an evening filled with delectable delights from the finest restaurants and caterers, wonderful vineyards, specialty brews and spirits, confections, and so much more. The Chamber's signature event will be held at Christina's on Route One in Foxboro on March 26, 2009 from 5:00 to 9:00pm.
Formerly known as the Taste & Toast of Neponset Valley, it was first held in March, 1999 at the Norwood Elks. We have had the good fortune to be at Christina's for the last six years. If you've attended this fabulous Flavors Gala you must recall the elegant ambience, over sixty superb stations offering sumptuous fare and a bevy of beverages paired with great entertainment and networking par excellence. It's truly The Talk of the Town!
Our gala event absolutely would not be possible without the efforts of many volunteer Flavors Committee members - and we would love to have you as a member of this essential committee! Our committee will contact prospective Flavor exhibitors, help promote ticket sales, and volunteer for a portion of the event. If you are interested in helping us make the 10th Annual Flavors Gala the best ever, please contact Kathleen at kathleen@nvcc.com or 781-769-1126. We are pleased to announce the Flavors Committee will be chaired again this year by the incomparably hard-working Jackie Halfond of Christina's/Stoneforge Foxboro.
This is a great event to sponsor! One terrific option is to advertise your company by having your logo imprinted on a durable "hands-free" plastic tray that allows guests to enjoy a cocktail and tasty tidbit while having a hand free to greet hundreds of attendees. Perhaps you're an oenophile and would prefer to have your logo seen on a commemorative wine glass? Either of these terrific advertising opportunities is available for $1,500, includes 500 pieces and four tickets to the Flavors Gala! Other advertising opportunites will be available. Contact Kathleen at 781-769-1126 or kathleen@nvcc.com if you would like additional details. |

From the President "When facing a difficult task, act as though it is impossible to fail. If you're going after Moby Dick, take along the tartar sauce." At a time of great stress for many - with the economy uncertain, with winds of change certain to arrive after next week's election and businesses struggling to remain afloat and set new goals - we are challenged and determined to remain positive! The staff at the Chamber recently attended the New England Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives meeting and one of the presentations focused on "Mind Capture" (Tony Rubleski's workshop). He stressed that all businesses face three main challenges: Attention, Time and Credibility. He stated that when marketing/selling, a person has 1-3 seconds to get someone's attention and that 'mind capture' is the ability to stand out, get attention and WIN new and repeat business. He identified children as the best marketers: they are fearless, ask a lot of questions and are curious and open to new ideas - and suggested that we might learn from their example. Tony identified 7 marketing trends that all businesses might utilize to improve their performance and bottom line and urged us to be merchants of hope and leaders in our communities. " Good marketing and poor attitude is a recipe for disaster" - opportunities abound around us and we need to be open to new possibilities, look at the world differently and utilize various media and technology to get our message out to new venues in sharp, succinct ways. The two day meeting provided us with interesting speakers, great networking and a new vision regarding the possibilities and future for NVCC. Look for continuing updates as we plan for the year ahead. I would also like to highlight an important upcoming event: the "How 'Green' is Your Business?" seminar on Dec. 2nd is a breakfast event at the Four Points Sheraton on Rt. 1 in Norwood with a great panel of experts and information tables regarding energy and waste savings for your business - you won't want to miss this helpful information for business of all sizes and municipalities. Pre-registration Required Click here to Register
And lastly, in this month of Thanksgiving and Remembrance I would like to take a moment to thank each of you for your continued support of the Chamber. Your friendship, energy and partnerships are greatly valued and, on behalf of the staff, we wish you well in the year ahead. We would also like to remember those who have passed away during the last year - Chamber friends, members, and our own family members. Each of these people touched us in profound ways and we are grateful for their presence and impact on our lives. We honor and remember them at this special time. May each of you celebrate Thanksgiving with those you love and may peace and good health reign in your homes. With gratitude and best wishes, Sue McQuaid

Ribbon Cutting @Edible Arrangments
|
The Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce will celebrate a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with Edible Arrangements, located at 104 Lenox Street, Norwood, MA on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 10:00am.
Edible Arrangements® is America's leading purveyor of artistically designed fresh fruit arrangements, specializing in creating delicious fresh fruit arrangements filled with hand sculpted fruit including strawberries, pineapple, grapes, apples, oranges, bananas, cantaloupe and honeydew. To sweeten an arrangement, pineapple daisies, strawberries, apples, oranges, and even bananas can be hand dipped in gourmet chocolate. "We are very excited to share our delicious and beautiful fruit arrangements with the community," said Owners, Irina and Arthur of Edible Arrangements in Norwood. "Our arrangements are the perfect gift for any occasion."
Members of the NVCC Ambassadors Group will assist in the ceremony, which is free and open to all to attend. For more information, call Edible Arrangements at 781-440-0777. |
We would be happy to publish your noteworthy cause, promotion or upcoming community event. Please email kathleen@nvcc.com with a minimum of 30 days notice.
Food Banks and families are stuggling to face budget cuts and shortages. Golden Living Center-Norwood, located at 460 Washington Street is having a Thanksgiving Food Drive. Drop off a non-perishable food item to the Thanksgiving Tree and help fight hunger in the Norwood Community. For more information, please call Kathleen Ferranti or John Ramirez at the Golden Living Center (781-769-2200).
The Norwood Food Pantry needs our help! They currently serve about 250 families with new clients arriving each week. The Pantry is supported by donations from many different organizations and individuals. They are located at 150 Chapel Street and are open Saturday from 8:15am to 1:00pm.
When students of the Norwood Adult ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program held at the offices of the Neponset Valley Chamber learned that the Norwood Food Pantry was in need of food they sprang into action. Over a two week period, students brought in canned goods and non-perishables to donate to the food pantry. On October 28th, students in the Level 5 class dropped off seven large boxes of food. Ruth Taeger, the director of the Norwood Food Pantry, was thankful and told the students, "We feed 250 families." Ms. Taeger further explained that The Norwood Food Pantry is badly in need of donations during these tough economic times.
Our own Nicholas Schiarizzi from Domenic and Anthony Catering and Donald Schiarizzi (l) from Re/MAX Landmark, members of The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, are back from celebrating the 175th anniversary of the "Peace and Trade" Agreement with Thailand and the United States. The ceremony was held in Bangkok October 10th, 2008 and was attended by Thailand's secretary of foreign affairs H.E. Norachit, US Ambassador Eric John, and the Bangkok Governor H.E. Apirak and the Honorary Consul General Joseph Milano of Boston. |
