Executive Director's Message | |
Dear PRPS Members and Friends,
Greetings! Fall is upon us and the scents and colors are becoming more beautiful and more intense each day. I hope that you have taken the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air and numerous festivals and events throughout Pennsylvania.
I wish to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to the PRPS Board of Directors for the opportunity to serve the organization as it's new Executive Director, and the support they have extended during my transition. I am fortunate to be able to spend time with both Bob Griffith and Kim Woodward (former Executive Directors) as they train and orient me in my new role. In addition, the PRPS team in the State College office is an amazing group of dedicated professionals, and I am blessed to be working with them. I have had the opportunity to meet many of our friends, members, and colleagues, and am making my way to as many sites as possible. I look forward to being involved in, and advocating for, continued growth and development for parks and recreation throughout our state.
We have been very active with several partners on legislative advocacy, encouraging conservation and recreation organizations to send a message to our senate regarding House Bill 2224, and asking them either to fix HB2224 (also known as the parks-for-cash bill) or reject it in its entirety. A letter was delivered on October 1, 2012 to the Senate, which could vote on the bill as early as this week. PRPS will send webnews as updates become available.

A special thank you goes out to the crew who spent their day beautifying the PRPS grounds on September 27th. The crew spent the day moving plants, planting, pruning, trimming, moving top soil, mulching, cleaning gutters and even changing parking lot light bulbs! They also installed a park bench that was donated in memory of Don Joyce. Kudos to the following: John Mikowychok, Judy Houck, Carrie Chuisano, Bob Griffith, Rob Lewis, Derek Dureka, Karen Hammond, Kurt Uhler and Becky Kandrac.
On Friday, September 28th, we celebrated the life and many contributions of Donald Joyce, with a ceremony and bench dedication. Special thanks go out to George Ely who generously donated a beautiful bench to preserve the memory of Mr. Joyce. Please visit the PRPS website for more details and photos of the ceremony.
Mark your calendar for March 24-26, 2013 for the PA Recreation & Park Society Annual Conference! "The Road to Making a Difference Begins with PRPS!" conference will be held at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, PA. Special thanks go out to Tonya (Tug) Brown and Ryan McCleaster, Co-chairs for the 66th Annual Conference, and the many members who volunteer on committees to plan and organize this special event. Visit the PRPS website for updates and news on the conference, speakers and special events.
Our Fall Membership Meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at The Holiday Inn, Harrisburg East. I hope to see many of you at that meeting. Room reservations may be made by contacting the hotel directly.
Thank you for the warm and professional welcome to PRPS! I feel very privileged to be working with a terrific group of people!
Warm regards,
Karen Burke-Crawford

Postive Coaching Alliance 2-minute Drills |
A Triple-Impact Competitor does not define success solely by the scoreboard. Striving to impact sport on three levels by improving oneself, teammates and the game as a whole, the Triple-Impact Competitor has multiple ways to define success.
Are you putting everything you can into refining your performance, both mentally and physically? Are you the best teammate you can be, quick to praise others and share praise that may come your way so Emotional Tanks are kept full? Do you Honor the Game by the way you compete?
Answering "yes" to these questions means you have a great set of relationships, which is a greater life-long win than anything appearing on a scoreboard.

Establishing Team Culture
PCA defines "culture" as "the way WE do things HERE." Early in the season, coaches should explicitly discuss expectations of behavior with players and their parents.
Regarding punctuality, practice attendance, attention, effort, playing time decisions, academic achievement, sideline behavior, respect for others and myriad other details, coaches must explain their standards. Doing so is a start toward enlisting the help of players and parents in building an optimal team culture.
It will take repetition, positive reinforcement when you see behavior you want and a willingness to deliver consequences fairly if you see what you don't want. But, from day one, there should be no question in anyone's mind about "the way WE do things HERE."

Parents' Perspective
Parents can help their children get the most out of youth sports by looking beyond the scoreboard. A youth sports experience put into perspective, with plenty of unconditional love and a focus on life lessons, can equip children with much of what they need to succeed in life.
Reward players for their hard work and commitment, no matter what the results, and they will grow into hard-working, committed young men and women. An opportunity for you to teach that lesson, and for your children to learn it, is contained within just about every moment of every practice and game. |
