Update on the Most Recent Grant Application Round.  Applications are currently under review for the Community Conservation Partnerships Program (application deadline was April 4, 2012).  This program combines funding from several sources including the Keystone Recreation, Park, and Conservation Fund; Environmental Stewardship Fund; federal Land and Water Conservation Fund; and the federal Recreational Trails Program.  Under this year's commonwealth budget the program will be able to continue to help build sustainable communities by providing grants and technical assistance for local conservation and recreation projects; landscape conservation partnerships; regional heritage areas; trails and greenways; and rivers conservation.  Grant announcements are anticipated in Fall 2012.

Positive Youth Sports Parents

submitted by G. Philip Brady, Jr., Assistant Parks and Recreation Director, Plymouth Township Parks and Recreation,

Greater Plymouth Community Center

"Primum non nocere or first, do no harm"

My first thought about positive sports parenting is summed up the Latin quote above. The bottom line is that there should be no reason, for us as parents, to ruin the experience for our children (or anyone else's).

Click Here for the 10 simple steps to being a positive Youth Sports Parent:

Positive Coaching Alliance 2-minute drills

Embracing Mistakes

If you are afraid of making mistakes, you will play tentatively, and tentative players usually get beat. It is better to make a mistake than to be afraid of making one. Sports are filled with mistakes.

The best baseball hitters fail about 70 percent of the time. Great shooters in basketball miss roughly half their shots. Elite corner-backs in football and closers in baseball cultivate "short memories" to quickly put mistakes behind them and prepare for what's next.

Every athlete makes mistakes -- lots of them. What separates great athletes from the rest is how they deal with mistakes. Strange as it sounds, to become a Triple-Impact Competitor®, you must embrace -- not fear -- mistakes

Emphasizing Effort

In Positive Coaching Alliance's ELM Tree of Mastery, ELM stands for Effort, Learning and Mistakes are OK. We cannot overemphasize the importance of effort: the one constant that every successful person must bring to every endeavor in sports and beyond.

The ability to sustain effort, even when positive results are not readily apparent, is one of the most important life lessons youth athletes can take from sports. Therefore, it is critical that coaches emphasize effort.

Consider conducting the occasional practice where you reward players with positive reinforcement based only on their effort, regardless of results. Try this in the first practice after a game in which your team's effort was lacking. That is when your players most need a reminder of the value you place on effort and probably need their emotional tanks filled, too.

Parents Approaching a Coach

It is natural for sports parents to occasionally wonder about issues such as playing time, position, or the tone a coach takes with their children. Sometimes that calls for the parent to approach the coach to discuss the matter.

Ideally, you would have made early, positive contact with that coach, introducing yourself at season's start, offering to help the team out however you can, and conveying the excitement your son or daughter has for the sport. That way, if an issue arises, you are not a stranger to the coach and there is a basis for discussion.
