    From the Executive Director

    Dear Members,

Happy Holidays! I hope this newsletter finds each of you doing well. This edition marks a change as we are committed to going back to a monthly issue to keep you better informed and supplement the periodic WebNews. We also plan to post each issue on the PRPS Website for access by those not on the regular email list.

My first order of business is to again congratulate the PA Bureau of State Parks for winning the National Gold Medal Award for State Parks that was formally announced and presented at the 2009 NRPA Congress in October and recognized at our recent Fall Membership Meeting. This was a bright spot for DCNR and state parks during the tough economic times that we are all facing.

As I'm preparing this article, on the way to the PRPS website for posting is the Registration Guide for the 63rd Annual PRPS State Conference being held on March 20-24, 2010 at the Seven Springs Mountain Resort being brought to you in close partnership with the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. This year's theme is "Keeping Pennsylvania Green"! and there are many great programs and events to highlight, but I'm going to start by picking two.

On Monday, March 22, our feature speaker will be John L. Crompton, a Distinguished professor from Texas A&M University who is nationally renowned for his knowledge, publications, and presentation on the community benefits of recreation and parks. His working currently with the National Recreation and Park Association on this topic, and he will be bringing this expertise to share with us at the PRPS Conference. Although everyone can benefit, we hope that every recreation and park agency director in PA will be able to attend. John's presentation will focus on much of the information in his publication, "Community Benefits and Repositioning - The Keys to Park and Recreation's Future Viability," with lots of practical tips and examples on how the information can be applied to communities. It's part of our PRPS efforts to help each of you succeed by bringing the best experts we can find, here to Pennsylvania. I attended John's session at the NRPA Congress in Baltimore in 2008 which sold me on inviting him for the next available conference.

On Monday and Tuesday, participants, and agency program staff in particular, will have the opportunity to attend the LERN Program Management Institute (PMI) and Certification program. In the opinion of many top park and recreation professionals, LERN (Learning Resources Network) provides the top training and information available nationally relative to programming success. We'll be providing the two days of in-depth training plus there will be two additional webinars and an exam for those who desire the Certified Program Planner (CPP) designation. I have no doubt that attendance at the PMI will greatly enhance the effectiveness of your program planning skills whether at a community center, state park, trail organization, or other provider and the benefits will more than justify the cost of attending the PMI. The cost to register for the PMI is $299 for PRPS members which includes the Full Conference registration with lunches, breaks, socials, exhibit hall, and other sessions not overlapping with the PMI. Registration is limited to 50, so register early to ensure your spot.

There's a lot more that you'll discover in the Registration Guide. We've also done all we can to reduce our registration fees as much as possible to help members and others be able to attend. The full conference member registration fee is $30 less than it was in 2008 and the daily fees are down significantly. Agencies able to send 5 or more staff should contact Kim or Tracy in the PRPS Office to receive information on large group discounts.

Good news from our PA Therapeutic Recreation Society (PTRS). A very knowledgeable task force of PTRS members, Carrie Chiusano, Becky Kandrac, Wendy Jo Hartsock, and Donna Hoshauer, recently developed a new publication and workshop entitled, "A Practical Guide to Planning and Programming for Persons with Dementia." The one-day workshop was pilot tested in early November 2009 at two long-term facilities with excellent success and feedback. We are now looking for facilities that would like to host workshops in their area as we roll out the program using our cadre of expert instructors. Interested? Please let Kim Woodward, our PRPS Training Coordinator know by sending her an email, kwoodward@prps.org, or calling her at 814-234- 4272.

We hope you'll take advantage of these two training opportunities as well as others like the 2010 Youth Sports Summit being offered by PRPS. Check out the PRPS website, www.prps.org, on a regular basis as well as the WebNews sent by Emily.

    Best regards,

    Bob Griffith

How to Get Approval to Attend This Year's Annual Conference - In 4 easy steps

    1. Write down the three to five most important strategies or issues being addressed in your organization right now.

    2. Think about how you personally contribute to those strategies. How is your work aligned with the larger organization's strategy or mission? Make a list of these "personal contributions to strategy."

    3. Look at the proposed agenda for the meeting and mark the sessions you want to attend that relate to your list of personal contributions to strategy, and also make a note of speakers or other people at the meeting you would like to meet.

    4. Write a short business case for how attending these sessions and meeting these people will help you contribute to the organization's strategy. Use this business case to make your request for attending the meeting.
