    Message from the Executive Director

Greetings! I hope all of you are enjoying the wonderful fall scenery that we have here in PA which is very evident here at the PRPS Office as I'm preparing this message. Thanks again to our PRPS Park Resource Branch for their continued support of the office landscape projects.

Our Fall Membership Meeting will be held on November 19th at the Harrisburg East Holiday Inn, and I want to encourage you to attend if at all possible. Our featured speaker will be Peter Harnik of the Trust for Public Lands Urban Institute who will offer a wealth of information on the value of parks to communities; the type of information that we hope will be of value to you as you prepare for upcoming budget discussions in these tough economic times. Additionally, there will be roundtable discussions and timely updates on Society business.

We just completed our 4th Annual PA Greenways and Trails Summit on September 28-29, 2008 at the Inn at Pocono Manor located in northeastern Pennsylvania. We had 220 attendees which included non-profit trail and greenway related organizations, planners, local, state and federal government officials, heritage area managers, and local recreation and park agency staff. This event is supported by a DCNR Recreational Trails Grant.

We have another new technical assistance publication available, Municipal Recreation Programming, authored by Sue Landes. This is a complete handbook that offers lots of tips and practical ideas on planning, scheduling, administering, marketing, and evaluating community programs. A "Recreation Program Toolkit" is included. The publication is available free from the DCNR Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, and the order form is available at
http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/brc/publications/ pubreq.aspx; type Municipal Recreation Programming Handbook into the comment box at the bottom of the form for now (until the form is updated) for the new publication. Copies will be available for pick-up at the PRPS Fall Membership Meeting as well.

Another new item available from DCNR is the Governor's Outdoor Task Force Report which provides a comprehensive set of recommendations to the Governor to assist the Commonwealth in creating better connections to the outdoors for all Pennsylvanians. The full report is available at www.connectoutdoors.state.pa.us, and a limited number of printed copies are available upon request. I was fortunate to serve as a member of the Task Force.

At the most recent Board Meeting of the PA Therapeutic Recreation Society (PTRS), we discussed ways to improve the delivery of regional workshop training to our TR members across the state. The goal of the workshops is to supplement the annual PA Therapeutic Recreation Institute by providing timely education and information close to the workplace at an affordable cost. The Board approved developing an adhoc committee to advise the PRPS staff on priority topics and locations. Members with TR topic suggestions or who may be interested in serving on the committee should contact Wendy Jo Hartsock, our TR Education and Training Specialist, whartsock@prps.org or 814-234-4272.

2009 P.R.P.S. 62nd Annual State Conference "Recreation: How Sweet It Is!"

How would you like a sneak peek into the 2009 PRPS Conference in Hershey? You have the dates: March 7- 11, 2009. You have the location: Hershey Lodge & Convention Center. Now here's a look into what you can expect at the conference.

Starting with Sunday's Citizen Symposium main speaker Peter Forbes on "Healthy Land, Healthy People and Healthy Communities". Develop a greater understanding of land use, and how to inspire community support for conservation. Rethink the strategies and language around partnerships; learn how to build stronger goals for collaboration with community partners to create a healthy community.

Followed by "Permission to Speed" with Rich DiGirolamo, the Conference Keynote Speaker Sunday evening. Learn how to redirect your organizations thinking, spark a change in attitudes, and drive your teammates to success. Rich takes a humorous, hard line approach to get people taking the necessary steps to cut the whining and look for the fun in all situations.

Monday's 'must see' speaker is Robert Kesten on "A Proactive Century" at the General Session. Did you know that today's media controls us, not the other way around? We are on the frontline of change, and Robert will help us learn what we can do about it.

Exhibitor applications are being accepted for the "Sweetest Show on Earth", with over 100 vendors filling the Great American Hall, Sunday through Tuesday. This year's Exhibit Hall will feature an exciting new game "Green Trail of Treasures" that will direct players around the room, visiting vendors along the way.

Off-site tours will include a trip to the new Hollywood Casino on Monday; and a Behind the Scenes Tour of the Boardwalk at Hershey Park on Tuesday. After the educational sessions, evening socials offer time to connect with colleagues, friends and to make new acquaintances.

This year we are asking members to consider sponsoring a meal for our students who attend the conference. For just $25 for lunch or $50 for Dinner, you could help a student have the opportunity to interact with recreational professionals during meal times.

So, mark your calendar and look for more details in the upcoming months. We look forward to seeing you at the 62nd annual PRPS Conference in Hershey. Meanwhile, get out and have some fun today and enjoy that "Sweet Recreation" life!

    2009 PRPS Awards Program

La-la-la-la -la ! He-He-He-He-He! She-she-she-she- she! They-they-they-they-they! You-you-you-you-you! It's time to " sing the praises " of the wonderful programs and events, outstanding publications and fantastic people associated with your agency!

One way to do so and gain recognition for your agency along the way is to be recognized through the annual PRPS Awards Program.

Submitting an entry is easy to do - the step by step process is described in information posted on the PRPS website > Awards & Scholarships > Annual PRPS Awards Program > 2009 Awards Program > see document listings.

You are also invited to contact PRPS Recognition & Awards Chairperson Susan Lohoefer (215) 643-1600 x3239 or slohoefer@upperdublin.net with any questions about the program or requests for an email containing current documents and forms.

    Important PRPS Awards Deadlines
    (1) Friday, November 21, 2008 (postmarked) - deadline for Intent to Submit forms (required first step in the process)
    (2) Wednesday, December 10, 2008 (postmarked) - deadline for completed entries

The Recognition & Awards Committee will complete its review and ranking of entries by early February 2009 with notifications made by mid-February 2009.

Award Winners will be recognized at the annual PRPS Awards Banquet held as part of next year's PRPS Conference "How Sweet It Is!" on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center in Hershey, PA.

Think about surprising a co-worker or fellow professional whose work and dedication you respect and admire! Do some sleuthing, talk to some of their other colleagues and co-workers, and submit that person for the Fred Coombs Honor Award, Distinguished Member Award or Outstanding New Professional Award. Remember...these three awards are kept "top-secret" until the night of the banquet...so don't let them know what you're up to! How sweet would it be for YOUR entry to win next year in Hershey!?!
