  • Greetings!

    Message from the Executive Director

    Dear Members,

I hope this Update finds you doing well and off to a great start in 2007!

We have many programs and activities underway, and I hope you’ll be able to take advantage of at least a few.

The 60th Annual PRPS State Conference is about 6 weeks away as I’m writing this message. We have our usual comprehensive offering of educational programs, and the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center provides the space to expand our exhibit hall to over 120 booths. This year, you’ll find more seating and more activities in the exhibit hall. There’s still time to register. We don’t charge late fees because we never want to discourage a member from attending.

We’ve already held our inaugural Youth Sports Summit in late January with about 80 participants in attendance and coordinated by the PRPS Youth Sports Task Force chaired by Doug Lowery and supported by staff member Kim Woodward. In addition to a well received program, the YSS offered the first draft of the Youth Sports Tool Kit. You may request a copy by contacting Kim at kwoodward@prps.org.

We are again seeking nominations for the John H. (Jack) Snyder Community Award. To recognize high quality and innovative recreation and park programs for persons with disabilities in communities across Pennsylvania. If you have a program that you think may qualify, I encourage you to submit an application by March 1, 2007. The award provides a scholarship for the Annual PRPS State Conference including full conference registration and three nights lodging for the staff person responsible for your agency program. The agency will also be recognized during the Annual PRPS Awards Banquet on Tuesday evening, March 27, 2007.

In May, we will be coordinating the 3rd Annual PA Greenways & Trails Summit at the Mountain View Inn in Greensburg on May 3-5, 2007. The three day event will offer a wide variety of educational programs including off-site programs to regional trail and greenway areas. We’ll be bringing in top speakers from outside PA as well as from across the state. This is a partnership effort with DCNR and other agencies and organizations involved with greenways and trails. The theme is "Community Connections through Greenways and Trails" which will emphasize the economic, social, health, wellness and environmental benefits of trails and greenways to our communities. This will be a cutting edge program at a modest cost.

PRPS has added a new training program on playground maintenance developed for PRPS and DCNR by John Balicki with the help of over a dozen park maintenance directors. It is a one-day course supported by a cadre of experienced instructors who will support the training on a regional basis. The first series of workshops are scheduled for this April. This course provides the essential basic information needed by every park maintenance person dealing with playground areas. It includes hands-on training for skills such as the proper installation of an “S” hook…a seemingly simple task but one that requires the right type of hook with the correct tool to ensure the safety of the kids using the equipment. The first registrations are arriving at the office. The brochure is at www.prps.org or you can call the office for a copy. This course does not replace the traditional National Playground Safety Inspector Certification Course which we offer twice each year. The next NPSI course is on May 9-11, 2007 in Allentown.

Another new workshop series will focus on how to operate concessions particularly for swimming pool areas. Malcolm “Gene” Eubert, Jr. from the Blue Mountain Recreation Commission will share his many years of experience and comprehensive knowledge of concessions during a one-day course to be offered three times across the state in April. Many of our aquatic members have been looking for training beyond the basic swimming pool management course, and this is an offering to begin to meet that need. A successful concession program can make a major difference in the financial success of a pool operation, and Gene has always been recognized as one of the best experts at running concessions. He is also an experienced instructor. If you are involved with concessions, you won’t want to miss this course.

For our PTRS members, the Annual PA Therapeutic Recreation Institute offers a comprehensive package of therapeutic recreation and activity coordinator training every year. For the 39th Annual TRI scheduled for June 5-8, 2007 at the Harrisburg- Hershey Holiday Inn in Grantville, this year is no different. Program development is on track and the registration guide will be available soon.

I also want to update you on the progress and plans for your PRPS Office. The library/Board Meeting area has continued to be upgraded with the permanent shelves and a new wall and door enclosing the area. During the Board of Directors Retreat on May 15, 2007, the library will be officially dedicated as the Fred and Ann Coombs Library. A reception and luncheon is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. that day, and all PRPS members interested and able to attend are welcome. Watch for more information in the next Update and at the PRPS Conference.

We are also working with John Mikowychok and members of the Park Resource Branch on a new Landscaping Plan for the office. With the completion of the parking area project, we want to continue to upgrade the property utilizing good, sustainable park maintenance techniques. We’ll be emphasizing native plants and lower maintenance approaches. We expect to hold a member work day in early May as we did last year for clean-up, mulching, and some new planting.

Thank you to all who have contributed to the Club 100 effort to help establish the permanent PRPS Endowment Fund with the Centre County Community Foundation. We are almost there with just $4500 left to go. I expect this will be accomplished by the end of this year’s Conference and that the Endowment will be available to those who wish to support PRPS through this vehicle into the future.

“Celebrate the Brilliance of Recreation and Parks” at the 60th Annual PRPS Conference
    March 25th – 28th, 2007
    Hershey Lodge & Convention Center
    Chocolate Town, USA

“Celebrate, Celebrate, Dance to the Music!” Celebrating our parks, programs, recreational facilities, trails, and services – that’s what we’ll be doing at the 2007 PRPS Conference from March 25th – 28th, 2007. Join us in Hershey – “The Sweetest Place On Earth”, as we gather together to share our ideas, our successes and our struggles. HersheyPark will also be celebrating “100 Years of Happy” as they commemorate their 100th Anniversary!

The Conference has something for everyone with seven educational tracks covering program topics from “Building Your Own Registration Software” to “Invasives Removal”, to “Summer Staff Romances”. If you are interested Aquatics or Therapeutic Recreation Services, there are sessions just for you such as the “Pool Management Workshop” and “Diversity and Teamwork”.

Are you a Citizen Board Member? Then you won’t want to miss the Citizens Symposium scheduled for Sunday. It is all about the special challenges you face while trying to serve your residents. Are you a Student or New Professional? There are several sessions specifically designed to address your issues and concerns. How to find an internship, professional certification, and developing supervisory skills are just a few of the session topics that are part of the Student/New Professional Track.

In between all of the great educational sessions, you will want to be sure to visit the Exhibit Hall featuring the new “Diamond Court” and “Gem Stone Displays”. Be sure to bring your business cards to play “Jewels of the Aisles”. Your business card IS the game card – nothing to fill out, no stickers to collect. Simply drop your business card in the special Anniversary Boxes at participating vendors’ booths and check back often to see if your name has been drawn and posted as a winner!

We mentioned celebrating and celebrate we will! Sunday night we’ll celebrate the "PRPS March Madness". Starting the evening with the Hoop Shoot Tournament and other activities from E*L*F. Throughout the evening, the NCAA Tournament will be played on the big screen and the evening concludes with AMAJK (a magic) DJ so your feet can celebrate too!

Monday evening offers several types of celebrations. If you’re feeling lucky you can sign up for the PRPS “Bury the Mortgage Poker Tournament” or try your hand at the Casino Night complete with black jack tables, roulette wheel, craps and poker tables and of course – slot machines. If you’d rather tour the pubs of Harrisburg, sign up for the Harrisburg PUB Crawl, sponsored by Lowee’s Group Tours. Thanks also to E*L*F Entertainment for sponsoring some of the activities for the Tournament and Casino Nights.

Tuesday night is the Anniversary Celebration! The formal evening begins with the Awards Reception and the “Supreme Beings of Parks and Leisure”. After the Awards Banquet and Awards Presentations we’ll be “Dancing with the PRPS Stars”. The evening will end with dancing to tunes from a fabulous disc jockey, socializing with friends both old and new and “Celebrating the Brilliance of Recreation and Parks!” “Black tie” attire is encouraged for this formal evening.

Now that you know all about the celebration, make sure you don’t miss out on any of it and register today! The Registration Guide is available online at www.prps.org. If you have any questions, please contact the PRPS Office at 814-234-4272.

Don’t waste any time! Register today and let the celebration begin!

3rd Annual Greenways & Trails Summit
    DCNR

    May 3-5, 2007
    Mountain View Inn Greensburg

On behalf of the Summit partners, you are cordially invited to attend the 3rd Annual Pennsylvania Greenways and Trails Summit being held on May 3-5, 2007 in Greensburg, PA. Being held in the historic Mountain View Inn, this year’s Summit features a wide variety of quality educational programs, well-known speakers, and many networking opportunities that will highlight “Community Connections Through Greenways and Trails.” We’ll also be taking advantage of the wealth of greenways and trails in the Laurel Highlands for our off-site events.

After a welcome and update from DCNR Secretary Michael DiBerardinis, our opening session speaker will be internationally known greenways and trails expert, Gil Penalosa, who will bring one of the featured sessions from the 2006 National Trails Symposium. At the luncheon on Friday, nationally known greenways consultant Chuck Flink will share his extensive knowledge. Both will be participating in additional breakout sessions. On Thursday evening, our Summit banquet will feature speaker, Jeff Tobe, who will expand our thinking to “Color Outside the Lines.”

Thanks to the financial support of the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources through a Recreational Trails Grant, we are able to offer the Summit at what we feel are very reasonable registration fees to enable as many persons as possible to attend.

This is a comprehensive, user-friendly tool kit for everyone from the administrator to the coach. Great tools for youth sports organizations such as evaluations, by-laws and background check recommendations. This was very well received at the Youth Sports Summit in January and the PA Youth Sports Task Force will be distributing them at the Annual Conference in March during their roundtable session on Sunday, March 25th. Hope to see you there! Special thanks to NAYS for their support of the tool kit. If you are interested in receiving this, please contact Kim Woodward at PRPS.
