Workplace Trends

The current workforce includes four unique generations which have different attitudes toward work. Divergent views can pose a number of challenges in the workplace particularly as they relate to training and team building initiatives.  Understanding each generation's goals and motivations will make it easier for you to develop a strategy to leverage this diversity within your team and accelerate their performance. The book entitled, When Generations Collide highlights the following generational differences in the workplace:

Career Goals

Rewards

Training

Traditionalist

"Build a legacy"

"Satisfaction of a job well done."

"Learned it the hard way; others can, too!"

Goal is to work for the same company for a long time.

Value job security.  Reinforce the value of benefits and reward with recognition.

View younger learners as spoiled.

Baby Boomer

"Build a stellar career."

"Money, title, recognition, the corner office."

"Too much training and they'll leave."

Goal is to work their way up, becoming vested and secure in their accomplishments.

Generation of strivers that are competitive.

Training is a way to show you are getting ahead.

Generation Xer

"Build a portable career"

"Freedom is the ultimate reward."

"The more they learn, the more they stay."

Build a portfolio of skills and experiences that guarantees that no matter what cataclysmic event occurs, you'll be able to land on your feet.

Freedom is the ultimate reward for Xers.  Reward them with tuition reimbursement, retirement plans, training, on-site daycare, and career pathways.

Need to feel they are learning new skills and developing a portfolio.

Millennial

"Build parallel careers"

 "Work that has meaning"

"Continuous learning is a way of life."

Want to build a portfolio of skills to be cross-trained in several areas in order to "fit in" the changing world and job market.

Want to know that their work has meaning.  Rewards include ability to work in teams, decision making, and tangible rewards.

First true generation of lifetime learners.

From Service Center to Profit Center

As organizations search for ways to profitably grow their business in this new economy, more emphasis is being placed on the role of customer service to foster stronger client relationships by identifying and servicing unmet needs.  And, there's a solid business case driving this trend.  As organizations move from providing great customer service to the next level of connecting with customers, identifying unmet needs and providing relevant solutions, they find that their service centers are being transformed into profit centers.

Moraine Park has long partnered with AchieveGlobal®, a leading provider of leadership, sales and customer service training and is proud to bring you an exciting new training opportunity to help your team develop these skills.

Selling Through Stellar Service will teach your employees to use a proven needs-satisfaction selling process. This training uses language and context appropriate for those employees who often feel that they're not really salespeople. The skills gained help organizations to both save money by solving problems better and faster, and to make money through cross-selling and up-selling.  Your employees will walk away with skills, knowledge and attitudes that to guide and expand customer conversation to move your customer service center to a profit center.

Meet Karen Coley

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Coley worked in the management side of business and industry as a Human Resource Manager for a large corporation and as a private business owner, for over 20 years before joining the technical college system as a member of the Economic and Workforce Development team.

"My experiences in business have taught me that an organization can not be complacent and expect to be successful in today's world. We all know that the pace of technology and change can be overwhelming, and successful organizations realize that partnerships, collaborations and continuous learning are key to their continued strength and survival" said Coley. "The resources, knowledge and training that Moraine Park can offer companies can help them keep their competitive edge and maintain their strategic focus. We have the added experience and knowledge of living and working in the same towns as the businesses operate in, giving us an added understanding of the challenges our local organizations face and effective solutions to those challenges."
