An art and craft gallery in the Welsh market town of Machynlleth, Powys has embraced information technology and is set to reap the benefits. Spectrum Gallery is a highly individual gallery established in an 18th Century listed town house. Owners Pamela Taylor and Paul Martinez-Friaz opened the gallery in 1983 and it has achieved recognition as an original, independent gallery, specialising in contemporary paintings by Pamela and Paul, studio ceramics, prints, jewellery, glass and sculpture.

Spectrum Gallery wanted to have an effective Web presence in order to showcase some of their work and communicate the wide range of high quality goods that they had for sale. Many of the gallery’s customers come from outside the local area and the Internet offers an excellent way to advertise the gallery 24 hours a day to a wide market audience. The business also wanted to upgrade their computer equipment and Internet connection in order to photograph and scan images of paintings to eMail to prospective customers, and manage their Web site.

The business received support from Opportunity Wales in order to upgrade their IT systems and Web presence. InSynch eCommerce Adviser, Eddy Webb, was assigned as the business’s personal adviser and was able to assist Spectrum Gallery at every stage of the process. He said “Spectrum Gallery needed to have a Web site that reflected the high quality image of the gallery and a computer system that enabled it to fully take advantage of electronic communications.”

Through the Opportunity Wales programme, Spectrum Gallery were given advice and hands on support on the purchase of a new computer and how to get the most from it ,and were assisted in upgrading the Internet connection to broadband with a wireless network. Help was then given in preparing a Web design brief for a new Web site and a Web developer was carefully selected. The end result is that the business now has a well designed Web site that can be seen by prospective customers all over the world, at any time of the day or night.

Paul Martinez-Frias from Spectrum Gallery said "At Spectrum Gallery it has to be said that the old cogs in this particular machine have been well oiled by means of sound advice administered with patience by Eddy Webb, our mentor for the project, to whom we are most grateful. The encouragement afforded by the Opportunity Wales scheme has helped put us in the forefront of electronic communication with existing and, importantly, new customers."

Every month we will be bringing you 2 of our top ten search engine tips that will help you get more traffic from the search engines.

The top ten are:
1. Choose the right keyphrases
2. Optimise every page on your Web site
3. Optimise your Page Titles and other Meta Tags
4. Optimise your Page Content
5. Undertake a reciprocal links campaign
6. Use keywords in hyperlinks, filenames and image text
7. Make sure your site is search engine friendly
8. Do not spam the Search Engines
9. Update your site regularly
10. Buy the right domain names and use them to your advantage

This month we are covering tips 1 and 2.

1. Choose the right keyphrases

Choosing the keyphrases to work with on your Web site is a vital first step before optimising your site for the search engines. If you optimise for the wrong keyphrases (ones that people don’t often search for), then even if you succeed in getting to the top of the search engines, this will be in vain as not may people will be searching for these keyphrases, resulting in very little new traffic. For example, your Web site may rank in the top position in Google for ‘your business name’. However, this is unlikely to gain you any new customers, as they will probably not know you exist in the first place. There are various ways to discover what people are searching, but two of the best online services are provided free of charge. Services offered at www.wordtracke r.com (American based searches) or Overture can help you discover which keyphrases people are searching for the most. By using these two sites you can identify what people are searching for on the Internet You should choose 2-3 keyphrases for each page on your Web site and 10-15 other words that often appear in similar search phases. Then you need to start to weave these keyphases into your Web site so when someone searches for a certain keyphrase in a search engine, your site is more likely to rank higher in the results.

2. Optimise every page on your Web site

Very often, people optimize their Web site’s home page for the search engines and then either don’t bother optimizing the rest of the Web site. Every page on your Web site has the potential to come up in the search engine results and can be optimized for different keyphrases.

It is impossible to optimize a page for dozens of keyphrases as in order to rank highly in the search engines for a particular keyphrase you need to make the page ‘focus’ on that keyphrase by including it in strategic and prominent places throughout your Web site. You can use the other pages on your Web site to target different areas of your business or different keyphrases that people are searching for.

For example, if you have a bed and breakfast business, you may focus on optimising for the keyphrase “bed and breakfast your location”. Other pages on your Web site may focus on the activities that can be undertaken whilst staying with you such as walking holidays or cycling. You can optimize each of these pages for different keyphrases.

To use a fishing analogy, think of your Web pages as different types of hooks that are suited to different fish. By optimising your pages in this way you create more chances to attract visitors to your Web site.
InSynch Business Services received two pieces of good news last month (July 2006). The first was achievement of the Investors in People standard, acknowledging good practise in staff training and development throughout the team of people working for the company.

The second cause for celebration was that InSynch was listed in the Western Mail (19/07/06) as one of Wales’ Top 100 Growth businesses for 2006 – an amazing achievement given that the business has only been established since February 2005.

“The past 15 months have been tough, setting up the business, taking on new staff and developing quality processes and procedures,” stated Anna Prytherch, InSynch Director, “so to receive such early recognition is fantastic and has given us a much needed spur to keep forging ahead”.

If your eMail address is on your Web site then there's a good chance that it's been found by the spambots and you're getting bombarded with unsolicited junk email. The Opportunity Wales latest tutorial shows you how to use some free software to filter out up to 90% of the junk.
