A Picture of Health ???

No, we do not want to shock you. But sadly, ask any reputable rescue group and they will confirm to you that the sight of an animal in this state is not uncommon.

How much longer are we all prepared to stay silent and think, Awful, but it's really not my problem.

And therein lies the problem. The animals owner cleary does not care, so who will ? No one ? Is that the society we want to live in ?

lorcan the blind kitten
Is this the Ireland we wish to leave to our children?
Lorcan, the blind kitten, one of very many dying unseen, unloved and uncared for. He was so very lucky, yes, he will never see, but he will be loved and will know that compasion amongst humans is not dead.

A CALL TO ARMS,THE ANIMALS NEED YOU !

EDITORIAL

In almost all newsletters we send out over the years we have pointed out the desperate plight of the countless abandoned and homeless animals.  Any of you who saw a recent TV3 program on the utterly out of control puppy breeding situation in Ireland will have been shocked and horrified. It showed another example of why our legislature is miserably failing the countless defenseless animals who depend on us. All reputable animal shelters in the country are collapsing under  overload, the DSPCA is laying of staff, the ISPCA and other rescue groups are drowning in the thousands of calls they receive, and more and more animals are being put to death country wide, as there are simply no places for them anymore anywhere. Cruelty and abandonment run rampant.

It is utter shocking to note that all this could have already been addressed.

On the Irish statue book the 1911 "Protection" of Animals Act still takes pride of place. No, this is not a typing mistake. The Act dates back to NINETEEN ELEVEN. Over 100 years old and in force as you read these words.  We truly wonder what excuse our government was able to invent to justify the continuing existence of this hopelessly outdated Act, which well and truly predates the formation of the Irish Free State. When it came to the introduction of the smoking ban, this country led the way in Europe and our government really did us proud. But when it comes to animal welfare, they should hang their collective heads in shame. We trail miles behind other civilised countries when it comes to proper protection of our companion animals and the other animals who share this Island with us.

Simple provisions in decent legislation could alter all that. Mandatory microchipping would allow a lost pet to be speedily re-united with its owners and thereby save the councils a huge amount of money in not having to provide places for the found animals.  Mandatory neutering of companion animals would allow a start to be made to the scourge of  the "Free to a Good Home" culture. And those are just two small examples.
Decent legislation would incorporate the "Duty of Care" to an animal, as well as the statement of he "5 Freedoms".  Current legislation does not put any duty on an owner to provide food, water and shelter, the most basic needs for any animal.
Notwithstanding the many good and kind people who love their pets and will really care for them, and there are many of them, there seems to be a far larger section of people out there who seem believe that " Animals are for Man's use and abuse".

WHERE IS THE POLITICAL WILL TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM, OR AS IN THE CASE OF IRELAND HAVING BEEN WARNED BY THE EU TO UPDATE ITS LAWS REGARDING EXPERIMENTS ON ANIMALS OR FACE HEAVY FINES, DO WE HAVE WAIT FOR THE EU TO FORCE IRELAND TO UPDATE ITS HOPELESSLY OUTDATED 1911 ACT ?  DO OUR POLITICIANS NOT CARE AT ALL? OR DO THEY SUBSCRIBE TO THE "Animals are for Man's Use and Abuse" philosophy? Or maybe they believe in the saying:

"An animal has no value, unless you can sit on it, eat it, sell it, or bet on it."

With the responsibility for the replacement of the utterly outdated Acts firmly in the hands of the Department of Agriculture, it is vitally important that you make your views known to them. They need and want to hear from you as to what you think should be in the replacement Act(s). Please write to them, c/o the Principal Officer, Dept. of Agriculture, Animal Health and Welfare Division, Kildare Street, Dublin 2.

Work on a new draft 2012 Bill is underway we are told and you can view the draft by clicking this link.  Please please use this golden opportunity to help the department by sharing your views as a concerned citizen and animal lover. God forbid that we would have to wait another 100 years for  a revision?

PLEASE MARK YOUR DIARIES NOW AND SET ASIDE JUST A COUPLE OF HOURS  on that Sunday for the ARAN rally.  IT'S THE LEAST WE CAN DO FOR THE ANIMALS!
It's on a Sunday, so ARAN is  hoping that people who work during the week, and generally can't make weekday events - will be able to attend.

As the saying goes: For evil to triumph, it is only necessary for good people to remain silent.  Please Remember this: If YOU remain silent, you have lost your right to speak on their behalf.
As we said before many a time... ohhh and ahhh... on Facebook does not save lives. Concerted ACTION DOES. We count on you being there to lend your personal weight to this rally. And if you really and truly cannot make it, can you look us straight in the eye and show us the many letters you have written to the minister ? Can you ?

PLEASE REMEMBER THESE WORDS, from our most heralded national poet, before you decide you cannot be bothered:
"Our worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them but to be indifferent to them, that is the essence of inhumanity"
  George Bernard Shaw

Cruelty to animals must stop 2

" We can judge the moral progress of a nation by the way it treats its animals"

Mahathma Gandi.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
YOUR HELP CAN AND WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Editors footnote:

We apologise to our readers that it has taken a long time to get a newsletter out to you. With almost 200 animals to care for, admin has gone by the way as the animals  and their care take absolute priority. Our newsletters normally are full of rescue stories but we consider this appeal to be again of crucial importance and would like nothing better than to see the day that the ACS and others like us would be no longer needed. Hence this no frills appeal.

To say that animal situation country wide is bleak is a huge huge understatement. EVERY REPUTABLE group or rescue organisation in the country  is at deaths door with overload. Animals are being thrown at us from all corners. Furthermore, many of the smaller rescues (and some of the larger ones too) are running out of money. xxx Euro will feed xxx mouths, but not yyyy mouths. That, coupled with our ASTRONOMICAL vets bills makes for living very very close to the edge.  Last month alone saw 5000 (Five thousand) Euro paid to various vets we work with. The simple question is: what are we going to do about it ?  Sitting at home saying: It's awful, it's a shame, it shouldn't be allowed to happen... and the other 2012 possible things we can say is easy. Being there in Dublin in person really isn't a lot harder but.. you have to make an effort.

To see what welfare groups can achieve, and are doing in attempting to clean up the dreadful mess we are left in and what can be achieved, take a look here at some of the many stories and photos.  Please note that these pages change on an almost daily basis.

From all the voiceless animals who need your help so very much, thank you.
