!!! STOP PRESS Now Is Your Chance !!!
Many of you, our regular readers, are aware that we have,
since our foundation, tirelessly campaigned for the introduction of up-to-date
animal welfare legislation. Ireland's almost obscenely outdated 1911 Protection of Animals Act was never designed to cope with what we have to deal with in 2009.
Even though there are some signs that the frontal assault by many welfare
groups is finally wearing our government down, we have seen nothing concrete as
yet,
and the opposing farming and business lobbies are stronger and better financed
than we are.
In many cases, far reaching legislation has been introduced because
of pressure by the EU. Well, here is another chance. Please write to or email your MEP (European Member of Parliament) and ask them to vote in favour of the declaration by Alain Hutchinson, David Hammerstein and Neil Parish on the welfare of pets and stray animals. PLEASE NOTE THAT IRELAND
HAS NEVER RATIFIED THE 1987 European Convention for the Protection of
Pet Animals. Shame on us! And this partially explains the state we now
find ourselves in. For those of you who want to read the 1987 convention text,
you will find it here.
PLEASE ACT NOW ... or forever hold your peace. Do not think
that 'somebody else' will or should do this. If YOU care about
animals and their wellbeing, make YOUR voice heard; or lose your right to complain. Five minutes of your time can save countless lives. You'll find more details on our website. The European Parliament will decide about animal welfare in Europe in May 2009. Next week, next month, whenever, is not good enough. Please do
this TODAY.
Thank you. Albert A Kleyn, ACS Chairman
|
We've made it easy for you to follow up on Albert's plea - just check our website for details. And while you're doing that you might also like to sign the petition on the same issue at Care2.com.
Here at the ACS, as we welcomed in the new year - a year of opportunity and promise! - we also gave a warm welcome to Cathy Wilde, our new ACS Administrator and Fundraiser. Cathy has joined us after setting up the Dromsligo ISPCA Equine Rescue Centre - and we're delighted to have her (and her impressive experience and skills!) working alongside us towards a better future for animals. You'll find a few inspiring words of introduction from Cathy in this enews issue. But Terry isn't escaping so easily!! She's organising a fantastic fashion show for the ACS this spring and we're hoping we won't have to say goodbye to her for a good long while!!!
This enews also highlights more inspiring stories of hope from animals the ACS has rescued; there's special offers (see Kitty's Cattery and ACS Calendar 2009); and we've info on how you can help us - by participating in our fundraising events (always fun!), by sponsoring one of our animals in need (see Attila's story) and/or by having a damn fine read (Rewarding Readings); finally, we've petition links to give you the chance to express your views!
We've no space to include the full story of the farm cats rescued from a diet of bread and water ... and the happy future they can now look forward to, thanks to Sara's efforts! Read it by clicking the link.
And we've only just enough room left here to say Congratulations! to Anne Fitzgerald, our phone lady, on becoming a granny!!!!

Ivy - Moving Up From the Streets You may remember Ivy, tied to a lamp post in the middle of a small West Cork
market town last year, beside a sign reading 'This dog was found wandering in
traffic last night'. Rescued by Jennifer from the ACS, Ivy
was delighted to find herself cared for - but was returned from her first
trial home labelled an 'escape artist'. Undaunted, Ivy accompanied
Jenni to an ACS street collection and proved to be a true spokesbowwow
for dog kind. Ivy even helped one little girl conquer her lifelong fear
of dogs long enough to pat a dog for the first time ever!
Though tempted to keep Ivy as an ACS rep, Jenni found a marvellous home for her, with the help of the W Cork Animal Welfare Group. Jean and Sarah, based in Cork, are delighted with their new companion and keep Jenni updated on her progress.
You can read more of Ivy's story here.

Sponsor a Warlord!
This is Attila the Hun, Tila for short. He's about
ten years old, and his battered face and sturdy body show every year. This picture was
taken three weeks after his rescue, and you'll see he
still has a long way to go before he's presentable. Tila had to have both ears removed due to cancerous growths. He also
had a bad case of lice (hence his bald nose!). But what he lacks in
looks, he makes up for in personality!!
Tila won't be fit to be rehomed for a while yet. And he's FIV positive too,
so finding him a forever home will be even more difficult. So he's looking for sponsorship to fund his care, medication and maintenance - though he's more likely to say 'Gimme!' than 'Pretty please?' (We're working on his etiquette!)
You can find out more about Attila and our other animals looking for sponsorship here.

Bagging & Tagging
ACS bag-packers, fundraising in Dunnes Stores, Bishopstown, found a little dog, lost and alone! After being in foster care for three whole days he was delighted to be re-united with his owners -
thank you Sylvia! Leo is 17 years old, and after following one of his owners to
the shops, became lost and, as he had no phone tag on his collar, it took us 3
days to find his people.
A happy ending - but an illustration of how important it is to ID our animal companions. Check Irish Animals for links to comprehensive information on what to do if you've lost your dog or cat. And, in my search for more information on the subject, I stumbled across a wonderful organisation - In Defense of Animals (IDA), based in the US. Although inspired by confronting pet theft and only refering to US links, their 15 Actions You Can Take to Protect Your Animal Companions is well worth a read for anyone who wants to keep their furry friends safe. Do check it soon though, because it looks to me like an old, forgotten page that might well get deleted. And don't forget to spread this information around - sadly, animals get forgotten and deleted too.

Rewarding Reading
Want to forget about the doom and gloom for a while? Forget
about robber barons (now called Bankers) and Levy's (TAXES, to you and me)
and enjoy a good read? Well, look no further, just click here.
And if you are in the mood for reading, why not read An Angels
Story? It, too, will make you pause for a while and reflect on those wonderful animals
who are our companions on our road through life. Angel's story is right here.
Do you believe in Magic? (No ... not of the 'financial
regulator kind' which magically makes your hard-earned money vanish into thin
air, or other people's pockets.) We mean real, wonderful animal story magic. If
so, put those reading glasses back on and click here.
The ACS expresses its appreciation to Mrs. Karen Lynch of War of Wits Publishing for her kind permission to link to her stories. Her website is well worth a visit!

Fundraising News & Events

A Few Words from Cathy Wilde - our Shiney New Fundraising Co-ordinator!! I have the unenviable task
of taking over the fundraising from Terry Lane - a very hard act to
follow! Terry worked hard to put the Cork ACS on a safe path for financial
security into the future. It won't happen yet - but with your help, and following Terry's plans, the needy animals of Cork have a
brighter future ahead. I pledge all my energy and commitment to this end, and
I hope we will all get to know each other, have a great time this year and make a big difference to the animals who depend on
us for their lives.
So, as you read the
outline plans for the next few month's fundraising (see below), please think - is there
anything YOU would like to take on, to
organise, to take part in, or even an idea for an event to pass on to me????
I
am very open to ideas, suggestions, comments and constructive criticism!!! Get in touch!!!

Just In ... Onyx Found Just the Right Setting!
Sadly, we seldom hear from our fosterees' forever homes. As an ACS fosterer my heart lifts when I do hear how my charges are getting on - and it lifts even higher when photos are involved!! I fostered Onyx and his siblings last year and was delighted to hear from Rebecca Lazell and family, proud new guardians of Onyx, now Jasper (pictured when first rescued and now). And Rebecca's niece adopted Gasolina, another of our foster kittens - bonus!!
Rebecca said, 'We adopted Onyx on Saturday
after a 3 week trial period (to see if my 10 year old, very sensitive cat
would accept him!). He desperately would like my older cat to be a bit of
a mum to him, but Jessie is having none of it for now. He's lucky to have a lovely big garden to play in,
and trees to climb, although he did fall out the other day when the neighbours
cat, Digger chased him to the end of the branch! I can't wait for Jasper to get
bigger and scare Digger out!!'
And, just in, with accompanying photo ... 'Jasper is still georgous!'
The full stories of Onyx, Gasolina and their families can be found at my ACS fostering webpages.

And that's all for this 'bimonth' - we'll be issuing the enewsletter every two months from now on ... do let us know if you've any suggestions or feedback!
And, before I go, I'll just reiterate Albert's appeal that you please find time to contact your MEP about voting for the declaration for animal welfare in Europe.
If there's one thing you can do for animals in Ireland in the next two months - This Is It!!!! Thanks!
