St. John's college student honoured.
Pictured here is St. John's College Cork student Deirdre Devine, at her graduation ceremony on October 22nd. Deirdre was chosen by the college to receive the 2008 Animal Care Society award. This award is presented to the student who, as determined by the college, has:
"Shown great committment. enthusiasm and dedication to the Animal Care Course; demonstrating personal, social and professional development and presenting a compassionate approach to working with and caring for animals".
This is the third year that the ACS has presented this special award to a St. John's student. The award consists of a beautiful Waterford Crystal trophy and a cerificate. ACS Chairman Albert Kleyn in his short speech praised the college for providing this course and reminded the students that each and every one of them has the ability to make a change for the better in the lives of the animals with whom we share this planet. From all of us in the ACS: Congratulations Deidre and well done !

HALLOWEEN ALERT.. To all our readers. This coming weekend will be Halloween. Fun for children ? Perhaps, BUT NOT FOR OUR ANIMALS. PLEASE keep your animals indoors and make absolutely sure that all of them have collar and tags with your name and phone number. Fireworks, bonfires and animals DO NOT mix. In addition to keeping them in, get some Bach Flower Rescue remedy and start putting it thru their water a few days BEFORE Halloween. Please help avoid the tragedy of lost and missing pets and above all, immediately report ANY acts of cruelty to the Gardai, it might save a life.

Please God, will it ever stop ?
Just look at him. Came home, how we did not know, with his leg broken. Age, not even 2 years. Owners not able or willing to pay the costs for his operation to have the leg pinned and plated. Yes, they would pay for his euthanasia. Luckily before the needle went into his veins the ACS heard about this and said it would take him on. No, we did not make that decision lightly. 500 Euro is a lot of money and we mean a lot. BUT.... STOP. Please Think for a moment. DO YOU want to play God, maybe just for one day ? Do you? No, we did not think you would but it is asked of us each and every day. We are critically low on funds, our vets bills are killing us so we had all the reasons in the world to say that we could not help here. So, some of us put our hands again in our own pockets and we found the 500. Right ? Wrong ? We do not know. But if we ask him and look in his eyes we do know the answer. RIGHT. The ACS, YOUR ACS, will never be wealthy, on the contrary, we are always one small step away from bankruptcy and collapse. Our vets bills will see to that. But we know one thing which gives us peace and courage. When we go to sleep at night we know that we did not leave one stone unturned to save a life. How many of us can say that? .

A Success ? You bet it was a success ! Almost 50 ( Fifty ! ) of our supporters proudly flew the ACS flag. The weather was fine and it was fantastic to see so many of you turning our motto into your own reality: Their Lives...Our Passion on that day truly became Their Lives...Your Passion. As in previous years, our now famous Polo Shirt, bearing the: "Have your best friend neutered slogan" certainly invited comments and those comments, it goes without saying, came from the "gentlemen" who perhaps felt somewhat treatened ? The ACS wants to say a heartfelt thank you to all who participated, far too many to list here. But, a special mention has to go to Didi and Jennifer, who did all the coordination and thus helped make this such a success ! So, keep that Polo Shirt ready and help us to make next years event an even bigger success.

All quiet on the Dublin front ?
Those of you who are regular readers of our newsletter know that we are very involved in trying to get our government to face up to their responsibilities and change our hopelessly outdated animal welfare legislation, namely the 1911 Cruelty to Animals Act. We know that the department of Agriculture has received our submission, and those of the many others welfare organisations who have made their views known in response to the departments request for input. But that is it. We have heard nothing more and to the best of our knowledge nobody else has either. We desperately need this totally outdated Act to be replaced. Replaced with an Act which protects our animals and brings with it a "Duty of Care" obligation to each and every person who has companion or farm animal(s) for which that person is responsible. You can rest assured that the ACS, YOUR ACS, will not be silent till we have seen the end of the old Act and its replacement. We will keep you updated with any updates we get on this matter.

Muffin is home !
Isn't he a dote ? Well, yes, but this dote, called Muffin, got badly lost. Yes, Muffin had a collar, but you guessed right, NO TAG, No microchip. But luckily for our Muffin, Lady Luck smiled on him. Muffin's owner contacted the ACS and was advised on what steps to take immediately. And... that worked, his poster was spotted and via our office Muffin was re-united with his Mum. He will be microchipped this week so as to enhance his chances if ever he goes missing again. We can't stress it enough, help us to help you, have your dog or cat microchipped, it might save his/her life one day.

And finally ? HAPPY BIRTHDAY ACS ! (From our chairman.)
On October 2nd this year the ACS was 8 years old. From our very small start we have grown into a animal welfare organisation which has thousands upon thousands of saved lives to its credit. YOU, our supporters and volunteers made this possible. It is thru YOUR EFFORTS and support that we have achieved this milestone. On behalf of the thousands of animals who's lives YOU have helped saved, we thank you. Be proud of what you have done and please realise that it could not have been done without you. THANK YOU ALL.
