WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Lost & Found: ACS Help Find Saffy

Saffy We all dread the thought of our precious pet going missing but it can happen.  Unfortunately the ACS receive many phonecalls asking for advise and help in finding missing pets (as well as found).  We would like to share with you one touching story about a little black cat, called Saffy that went missing last April:
Experienced cat lover adopted an ACS kitten called Saffy last September.  Much love and care was given to Saffy but after 9 months the unthinkable happened: Saffy went missing!
The owner was frantic.  She spoke to everyone in her neighbourhood, handed out flyers and posters.  Sightings were made but noone could catch Saffy!  Thankfully,  Saffy was still wearing her collar and was easily identifiable. Saffy's owner contacted the ACS for advise and help.  We always inform owners about the importance of putting up posters, flyers, talking to vets, neighbours, microchippingand of course put a collar with tag on your pet.  These and more are all vital ways to find your pet if she goes missing whether she is a dog or cat.  We supplied Saffy's owner with a cat trap and placed it the area Saffy was last spotted.  We waited hoping for the best...
Saffy went missing on the 19th April but on the 10th of May, Sarah our ACS cat adoption/rescue manager was approached by a little girl who told her about a small black cat with a collar that was lurking around her family's home.  Sarah went to investigate and found  out it was Saffy!  Many miles from her home!  Saffy and her owner were reunited.
Chairman's note: This goes to show, do NOT give up. Put up posters and widen the net, Saffy was miles away when finally found. Her collar saved her life ! Saffy is off to the vet in the next few days to be micro chipped, just in case she ever gets lost again.
APPEAL UPDATE
Please Help Me!
 Bennie the Injured Cat
Last month we told you the tale about Bennie the cat who was attacked by a dog and as a result developed a very bad infection in his rear paw.

UPDATE: Bennie is holding his own. The infection had gotten into his bone marrow but  Tom the vet has done everything in his power  to bring it under control. The good news is that Bennie still has feeling in the leg and maybe, just maybe,  his leg can be saved, Tom and  Leslie (his nurse) told us that in all their years of practice they have never seen a more loveable and kinder cat. Not a claw or paw has ever been raised to them. We will keep you posted on Bennie and his progress.

Our anticipated (reduced) bill will be more than 500 Euro. The ACS needs help, their vets bills last year were close on 90,000. Euro and they are unable to find this extra money.

Please please help me. I am only two years old. If you can, go to our website and click on the donate icon. Thank you. Bennie.

Note: This photo was taken before the accident.

Garfield's Story: The Conclusion

Last month we told you the story about Garfield.  He is a ginger and white kitten who was not wanted when born.  Garfield, like so many others, was given to us and then placed under the care of a dedicated cat fosterer and ACS volunteer.

This is the final part of Garfield's story as told by his ACS fosterer...
October 2007 Garfield Feb 08
"...Well the first thing I did that night was get fluids into him, we then gave him a bath as he was covered in his own excrement and we wrapped him in warm towels.  I made him up a bowl of baby rice made with kitten milk and he loved it. He went straight to sleep in my arms. I didn't go to bed that night as I knew that Garfield was not out of the woods..."

Jan 2008
"My Little man continued to thrive with the lots of TLC and a good diet.  He got his first vacinations early December and was offered a place in a UK adoption centre so we tested Garfield for FELV and FIV....
Garfield tested positive for FIV...I don't know what his future holds but I do know that unless a ultra special home turns up he will live out his days with me."

18th Jan 2008
"Today little Garfield has the sniffles.....something small as this can turn into something serious  for an FIV cat. I will be watching him closely tonight and will be taking him to the vet first thing in the morning if I am worried."

29th Jan 2008
"Yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Garfield was well enough for his second vacination.  He has been well this last week, he is still a small so we need to fatten him up another little bit and then he can be neutered."

14th Feb 2008
"Garfield has been sick for the last few weeks but once again he is fighting back.
Garfield is getting the best of care, he is a happy little kitten and every one loves him. He has been eating well for the last few days and drinking and he is giving plenty of kisses and head butts.  He even helps me out in the office from time to time and loves it!
Last week Garfield was nuetered.  He is like a diiferent kitten since his arrival last October. He is now  turning into a real playful kitty who just needs the right home."

There are many kittens just like Garfield who can offer so much love and happiness to someone's life. If you think you can offer Garfield our any other kitten that special home please contact us today info@animalcaresociety.ie

Adopt Me!
Kali Adoption CatHello I'm Kali
I know, I know, I am pretty. But that doesn't get me a home of my own. I'm a young cat, I'm neutered and very affectionate. I love humans if they love me, as matter of fact, I'd rather be with my own human than with other cats.  So why not adopt me!?!

Bennie the Sponor DogThis is Bennie.  He a beautiful Black Retriever.  To look at Bennie you would think that he is perfect, however, Bennie has a deformity in his front leg.  We are not sure whether it was caused by an accident a long time ago or he was born with it. Bennie will need care for his leg for the rest of his life and so finding a forever home for him may be difficult.

Please help us by sponsoring him.

PET CARE: Kitten Guide (PART TWO)

We, in the ACS Cork believe strongly in educating people of all ages about being a responsible pet owner, so over the coming months we would like to share with you the fundamentals of kitten and puppy care.

In this months issue we continue our piece about kitten care.

Your Kitten's First Day & Night!Bowie the Kitten

Settling In:
Your kitten is in her new home and there is so much to explore.  A kitten is very much like a baby and there are many dangers within your home that prove hazardous to a kitten.  So just like baby proofing your home, cat proof it.  Put away all dangerous products e.g. medicines, pesticides, some indoor plants.  Hide electrical wires and put away small objects such as elastic bands.  Kittens also love hidey holes like cupboards and washing machines so get to know where your kitten likes to cuddle up for a nap to prevent any accidents!
First Meal:
It is best for your kitten to continue eating the same food as she has been eating, so ask the original carer what her feeding habits are; type of food, number of meal per day.  If you decide to change her diet do so gradually so she wont suffer from any digestive problems.
First Night:
As this is the first time your kitten has been separated from her mother this can be very stressful time.  It is important to introduce good sleeping habits from the offset - place your kitten's basket in the room you have chosen for her and ensure she sleeps in it.  Your bed is not the ideal place for her, despite her willingness to cuddle up with you!  Remember habits developed as a kitten will continue as an adult cat and as she explores the outside world she may come in contact with parasites and therefore it is not very hygienic for her to sleep in your bed!  So a comfy basket is best.  Stand firm if she leaves out some pitiful meows at night, after 3/4 days she will soon be happy in her new bedroom!
