Hello!

In this months issue of eNews you will find lots of interesting articles; from caring for your new pet to reading the story about a very special kitten called Garfield.

However, we are sad to say that we have also encountered many cases of animal cruelty and you will read about just one of these cases in this issue.

Over the past month we have been very busy helping animals and have rescued and rehomed many animals including 71 dogs.  Their lives are Our passion but as always we hope by reading about our work it will become your passion too and that of your friends and family.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported our work in the past and ask for your continued support.  Don't forget there are many ways you can help a neglected animal; from donating as little as 5Euro a month, offering a good home or taking part in an upcoming fundraiser.

So email us at  info@animalcareociety.ie or check out our fundraising page to see how you can help animals have a better chance at life.

STOP PRESS: URGENT APPEAL!
Please Help Me

My name is Bennie. Here is my story: I was attacked by a dog and have suffered a broken Bennie Cat with injurypelvis, very badly fractured femur, and a dreadful infection has set in, spreading through my body from the bite wounds. The vet says that I might have to lose my rear leg but better my leg than my life. I'm at the vet clinic at the moment, the ACS vet is trying to bring that infection under control. He cannot operate while it is so bad, I would not survive.

My anticipated (reduced) bill will be more than 500 Euro. The ACS needs help, their vets bills last year were close on 90,000. Euro and they are unable to find this extra money.

Please please help me. I am only two years old. If you can, go to our website and click on the donate icon. Thank you. Bennie.

PS. This photo was taken before the accident.

ACS UPDATE
Ambulance pic1

Are we active ? You bet we are. By the time you read this the ACS will have moved another 71 dogs to safety to rescue facilities and homes in the UK.

All that since April the 6th. Some were ours, many were from others, we even helped out another rescue charity who. because of a parvo virus outbreak, could no longer cope.

We are trying to cope with a huge overload in both dogs and cats and our hands-on people are already stretched to breaking point.

The ACS, your ACS, lives up to its name: It does what it is best at: It cares.

There many ways you can help us contact us today and find out how!

Garfield's Story

Over the next two months we are going to tell you a story about Garfield.  He is, as you can guess, a ginger and white kitten who was not wanted when born.  Garfield, like so many others, was given to us and then placed under the care of a dedicated cat fosterer and ACS volunteer.

This is Garfield's story as written by his ACS fosterer...
" ...I took one look at the tiny little fellah that day and melted.  He spent a few days in my kitchen being fed and pampered...then we got a phone call from someone that wanted to adopt him.  That was his down fall.
He came back to me less than a week later nearly on deaths door"

How and why did this happen?  Our fosterer will start from the beginning...
October 2007 Ambulance pic1
"I was in the UK when I got the call to say that Garfield's new parents didn't want him any more, as he was not what they expected (despite our homecheck which informs the new owner of all aspects of pet care).

As stated in our adoption contract we will take an ACS animal back . So Garfield was returned to my home at 7pm that same evening.  As I was in the UK, my daughter took Garfield but was shocked at his condition.

He was barely moving and totally dehydrated.  She phoned me immediately and I advised her what to do to make him comfortable until I got home.  I remember it was Halloween night and I got home around 11pm to a very sick kitty.

I was shocked when I saw Garfield, he had lost so much weight.  We contacted the "owners" to find out what had happened in such a short time to make poor Garfield so sick.   They told us they had given him liquid paraffin, caster oil and more...they had cut back on his food and water as he had pooped on the sofa.....Jesus, I thought, what did they expect he is only a baby kitten....."

This is just the first part of Garfield's story.  It an example of what can happen to a kitten if a person isn't fully prepared to care for a pet, especially a kitten or puppy.

A pet brings so much joy into a family, but as well as joy it also brings responsibility.
Please read the remainder of Garfield's story in next months issue.

Sponsor MerlinThis is Merlin, aptly named for he indeed had that famous wizards luck. Of all places, Merlin was found in a sea cave. Yes, you read that right. An American couple, exploring the beautiful West Cork coastline in their yacht heard him bark. The lowered their rowing boat and got him from the cave.

Merlin suffers from very poor eyesight, has a heart murmur and is extremely afraid of men.   He requires that one in a million home so that he can receive the special care and love he needs. Please help us by sponsoring him.

Too Awful to Show

Too Awful to Show NO, this message has no photo. Death should be dignified. Our vet point blank refused to photograph this cat.
Her injuries were too horrific. In the many years we have been involved in animal welfare this has never happened to us. Tom, our vet refused. I too cannot find the words, how does one describe excruciating pain. Horrific injuries, legs rotted of, flies maggots and puss? How? Death was a blessing in her case, the greatest gift we in the ACS could give her. Read Full Article...

IF EVER WE NEEDED YOU, OUR SUPPORTERS, IT IS NOW.

OUR FINAL FIGURES FOR 2007 ARE COMING IN. OUR VETS BILLS WERE CLOSE ON €90,000 - NINETY THOUSAND EURO.

PET CARE: Kitten Guide (PART ONE)

We, in the ACS Cork believe strongly in educating people of all ages about being a responsible pet owner, so over the coming months we would like to share with you the fundamentals of kitten and puppy care.

In this months issue we will begin with kitten care, which will hopefully help you to become a good cat owner.  You'll learn about your cats health, diet and socialisation within the family.

Welcoming your New Member of the Family!Kittens

So you've just adopted your new kitten.  Congratulations!

Be Prepared:

Firstly, it is very important to be well prepared for your new arrival so have everything in place before bringing her home, including litter trays, feeding bowls and toys.  Try to collect her at the weekend so all the family is there to greet her and offer her lots of love and positive attention.
Transportation:
When collecting her bring a cat box, one large enough so it can be used when she becomes an adult and is relatively dark to reassure her.  Line the box with a cosy blanket, but don't forget to bring a spare and some absorbent paper just in case she has an accident on the way home!
Her New Home:
This is a very important stage, one where your kitten will explore her new surrounding and meet her new family.  Despite the excitement you may feel, it is best to curb your enthusiasm and let her explore her new home gradually and in peace and quiet.  A noisy, disturbing environment may cause your kitten to become a nervous adult so be especially careful if you have children or other pets.
Remember, this all new territory for your kitten and her safety and wellbeing is now your responsibility!
