The weather is cooling down and the holidays are approaching fast. I'll be spending more time at my school, St. Laurence, with the kids getting them ready for their Christmas performances and in the last week or two I've been writing a lot of new music. Now that the election is over and I'm not glued to CNN I will be writing even more!
Another cool thing is my friend
Maysa's new CD, Metamorphosis,
which I had the pleasure of playing on. This
lady has pipes and soul! There's a great
interview by Baldwin "Smitty" Smith with
Maysa in JazzMonthly.com which I
highly recommend to you. Speaking of
recommendations, if you're looking for
something different check out Jason Miles'
"Global Noize". I won't be surprised at all
if they both get Grammy nods for these great
projects. Check out more of what I've been
listening to in the article below....
Peace,

SmoothVibes.com has a great review of NO
LIMITS posted! An excerpt follows: If
there was ever any doubt that our friends
to the north know what's cool, it was erased
when Nick Colionne succeeded Chris Botti as
"International Instrumental Artist of the
Year" at the 2007 Canadian Smooth Jazz
Awards. Beyond his status as a top
headliner for shows and festivals across the
country, the guitarist has also become
legendary for his electrifying performances
on each of the annual All-Star Smooth
Music Cruises since 2005 and for hosting
the after-hours "Nick At Nite" jam sessions.
His quick wit and expert comic timing also
served him well as the host of this year's
Seabreeze Jazz Festival on Florida's
emerald coast. He's also the genre's most
dapper and sophisticated fashion plate in the
genre thanks to his crisply tailored,
colorful Stacy Adams suits... Now,
on his Koch
Records debut, he's doing more than just
Keepin' It Cool, the name of his 2006 disc.
He's boldly declaring there are No
Limits with an album that genre
crosses easily from jazz, R&B, funk and blues
and includes more of his low toned, seductive
vocals than ever before. reviewed by Jonathan Widran
Nick's last release, Keepin' It Cool,
was the #5 most played CD in 2006 on
JazzLynx.com, so he was thrilled to
know that his new CD No Limits had
become the
Showcase CD for the
week of October 26,
along with the feature article quoted below:
When Nick Colionne seemingly burst onto
the smooth jazz scene back in 2004, it belied
the fact he had been honing his craft for
many years. The Chicago-based guitarist grew
up surrounded by jazz, and by 15, he was
playing professionally. Early in his career,
Colionne enjoyed stints with The Impressions
and Natalie Cole but, in the course of
events, he returned to his jazz roots
releasing a well-received debut in 1994.
Although subsequent projects drew a small but
avid following, for a time Nick thought he
might be relegated to playing sideman gigs.
However, that all changed for the better in
2004 with Just Come On In which was
already
Nick's 4th album overall. The project proved
to be 'the' break-thru album for the year
launching Nick on the path to star status
in the genre!! A couple of years later
Colionne picked up exactly where he left off
with Keepin' It Cool, a release that
garnered Nick a win as the International
Smooth Jazz Artist of the year at the 2007
Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards!!
In the interim, Colionne has toured
incessantly and with those successes still
fresh in everyone's mind, he's back with "No
Limits", a cd whose title well reflects
his current philosophy on life and music.
The project illustrates Colionne's coming
of age if you will and therefore it's
now a pleasure to place Colionne and that
release into the soft sheen of our showcase
spotlight - as is the custom, we've
selected three great tracks, beginning with
the fluid "Ports of Call"!
At the start of Hour 2 is "Headin' Wes
Before Dawn" as Nick pays tribute to one of
his musical heroes that of course being Wes
Montgomery. Meanwhile, we have one of our
favourites entitled "The Big Windy Cat", and
a track with autobiographical implications,
as the closer! With a style that
stretches across urban and contemporary, Nick
Colionne's star continues its meteoric rise
so that "No Limits" is rightly the phrase of
the day!! By the way - congratulations to Ted Hasiuk, founder of JazzLynx's radio show and website, who has picked up two new affiliates in Baltimore and Houston in the last month!

Nick had a great time at Chicago's House of Blues in October, performing once again on Jim Peterik's World Stage show. This show is without a doubt as much fun for the entertainers as it is for the audience, and the great mix of artists Jim puts together can't be beat. This time around it included Dave Bickler and Jimi Jamison of Survivor fame, Martha Davis of the Motels, Ray Parker Jr. and so many more it would take another paragraph to list them all! There will be more "World Stage" in January of 2009 and Nick can't wait! Thx Jim! Another highlight of the month was performing with Norman Brown and Shilts on board The Spirit of New York in the Smooth Music Cruise All Star Jam. The boat was jam packed with a partying crowd and the music was off the hook, as was the backdrop for the cruise - the Manhattan skyline at night, Lady Liberty lit up against the night sky, and we were lucky enough to catch the last day of a special art installation, Waterfalls, which consisted of huge illuminated water displays cascading down at various spots along the cruise, including under the bridges of lower Manhattan. Unbelievable. Thanks to Bill Zafiros, Rich Engel and Henry Anderson for putting this really amazing evening together. The JazzTrax Catalina Jazz Festival was incredible as usual. The weather was gorgeous as Nick took the stage in the Ballroom and proceeded to rock the crowd with an incredible performance that earned him one standing ovation after another throughout the show. Thanks as always to Art Good for a great time. Closing out the month was a very special event - WGRV "The Groove" presented the Space Coast Jazz Festival "Jazz Cares" in Melbourne, FL. The proceeds from this concert weekend went to aid the victims of tropical storm Fay, which never made hurricane status and yet managed to devastate the area with flooding that destroyed hundreds of homes and disrupted thousands of lives. Nick and his music director and bass player Dave Hiltebrand gave the audience a great show as they closed out the Saturday line-up. Randy and Jan, we love you! photo of Nick in the audience at the JazzTrax Catalina Jazz Festival © Cary Gillaspie, ScenicJazz.com
