This Month's Topic: Attitude and Discipline

Waas Up? The holidays!!! Hey, as you all know the holidays are upon us. I want to tell you all to enjoy them and be safe. The holiday season is a special time to remember all the good things we have to be thankful for and look forward to the next year and the blessings that are in store for us all. So again have a Happy and Safe Holiday season.

Now, I wanted to talk about attitude and discipline. Attitude is very important in this business and a bad attitude will take you nowhere fast. When I speak of discipline I am talking about the way you approach every situation, I mean like practicing or going to play somewhere or whatever. Always have the attitude that you are one of many and that although you may feel that you are the best out there there is always some one else who feels the same way. You should always be confident but not to the point where you come off as arrogant. Let the music you play speak for how good you are. You don't have to brag or boast - people will hear it for themselves. I am talking about this because I see so many youngsters out here thinking they are the best thing since cartoons. When you brag about how good you are you are only trying to convince yourself. I believe in my heart that you will get more respect if you are a humble person and let the talent speak for itself.

Now a little more about discipline. You have to condition yourself for things like practicing at a certain time and how long you will practice. I know in an earlier issue I talked about just practicing at will and that is good also - it works for me. But, as a new or intermediate player you need to have some structure in your rehearsal times. I also want to tell those of you who have bands and play outside gigs, that the discipline also applies to getting to places on time. Early is always good, no one likes to sit around wondering when or if you are showing up for the gig.

I wanted to talk to you about these two subjects because I feel they are very important to your musical career. As I said, don't wear your ego on your sleeve - let the music do the talking. Be disciplined and easy to work with in all things you do, people will always remember you as a nice person to work with and will want to work with you again.

Last time I said I would answer any questions you may want to send and I am still waiting. I guess you guys know everything already (LOL)...

Well, I have to go now the music business is calling me and I must answer. Again, you all be good and take care over the holidays and I will be back in January 2007 to talk about scales and modes..

Who loves you? I do.

Peace, Nick
