A sold-out crowd of about 2,000 packed Atlanta's
Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre and grounds on
June 24, a very hot evening. Janita, a vocalist
from Finland who has been making select U.S.
appearances, opened the show by performing
selections from her new CD, "Seasons of Life". She
now has many new fans!
Following her show, Greg Fitzgerald, On Air
Personality,
Smooth Jazz WJZZ, Atlanta introduced Nick Colionne
and the band to the crowd. The audience responded
with
standing ovations for almost every
tune. Dave Kosh, WJZZ's Program Director, had the following to
say after the show..."Nick is magic onstage with a performance
that ranges from a nice laid back groove to high
energy. One of the best guitar shows around."
It hadn't rained for weeks in Atlanta, and the
crowd roared when Nick sang "Rainy Night
in Georgia" and rose to their feet to show their
appreciation. Randall Bailey, the gracious
General Manager of the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre, told
us that "Nick's performance was
outstanding and ...Nick is a real crowd pleaser". Following
Nick's show and a brief
intermission, Brian Culbertson then took the stage for
a
performance that threatened to be
interupted by a severe thunderstorm. Unfortunately,
the skies opened up at that point, but Brian and the
band continued with their awesome show for those
fans who were lucky enough to be seated under
cover. In the meantime, Nick was
outside in
the process of signing
autographs and CD's for patient fans, when extremely heavy
rain
and winds started. In minutes, the grounds
started to flood. Fans seated on the lawn ran for
cover, taking refuge wherever they could. Nick
followed a group of about 40 men and women into
the men's room, where he continued to
sign
autographs. Needless to say, it was the first time
his team ever sold CD's out of a bathroom! It was a
party in there, men and women all whoopin' it up in
the men's room with Nick, while we listened to Brian's
show.
This "Rainy Night in
Georgia" is one we and the concert attendees
won't soon forget, although Nick wants to assure everyone that
he doesn't take responsibility for the rain even if he DID sing
the song!!!
This month, Cox Cable Television subscribers can access a complete Nick Colionne video performance and interview, the first in the "Guitar Masters" series which can be found "On Demand" via the Music Choice channel. If you are a subscriber, don't miss it.
Nick did a special live interview on the nationally
syndicated Bev Smith Radio Show the evening of July
4th. This show is brought to you by American Urban
Radio Networks, the nation's only African-American
owned Radio Network Company. Bev Smith is
known for her ability to deliver critical information
and entertainment news. She has interviewed
personalities such as Bill Cosby, Al Gore, Pearl Baily,
Sammy Davies, Jr. and a host of guests, many of
whom she refers to as her "special friends". After
spending the evening of July 4th up close and
personal with Nick, and bringing
her listeners both Nick's music and a live interview,
she
now considers Nick to be one of her new "special
friends" and she just loved Nick's vocals on "Rainy
Night in
Georgia". Be sure to catch Bev Smith's show soon.

Nick has recently started a newsletter for kids interested in music and the music business called "Nick's Notes For Kids". The first issue went out to everyone on his email list, but future issues will go out to kids only (adults are welcome as well but you'll need to request that you be added!). If you have a special kid who would like to receive this newsletter please send an email to jazz@nickcolionne.com to sign up. Nick is thrilled with the early response to the newsletter which includes a wonderful feature by Carol Archer, Editor of the Smooth Jazz section of Radio and Records, a portion of which follows: Major props to Narada recording artist guitarist Nick Colionne, who recently launched the first issue of an e-mail newsletter for kids interested in music. Colionne has been mentoring kids for the past 11 years at St. Laurence K-8 School in Elgin, IL, as well as doing clinics nationwide for Epiphone, which hundreds of kids have attended through the music schools with which most music stores are associated. The newsletter is a natural extension for Colionne to reach beyond the kids he gets to see personally to kids everywhere who love music and want to hear from somebody who's "made it." One parent wrote, "It's really great of you to reach out to kids and encourage them with the love of music too. It gives them the eagerness from someone who has made it that, with trying and lessons and sticking to it, they can do it too."
