BLACK HISTORY TIME!

By: Linda

Domingo - Black History Month
"Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise. I rise. I rise." - Maya Angelou.

There are so many African-Americans who have contributed great things to our country, and now is a great time to honor them and learn about them. February is Black History Month, so we have some great books for sale! We have tons of books about famous black people like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Jimi Hendrix, Oprah, Michael Jordan, Malcolm X, and so many more. If you want to enjoy Black History Month and learn something at the same time, come to MTW and check out our display of great books about influential African-Americans!

VETERAN SPOTLIGHT: JUSTIN
By: Justin

Justin
I worked at MTW for about 6 months while I was in high school and learned a lot while I was there, including how to successfully run a business and how to be a great barista. I think the most valuable thing that I learned though was how to work on a team, and how important it is to be willing to help out wherever your team needs you. MTW helped prepare me for the real world. I graduated from high school and I recently started working at Stop & Shop. I'm planning on starting school at Bunker Hill Community College in the summer to study cooking. My goal is to graduate from there and become a chef in a great restaurant.

MTW Youth Experience Different Careers During Transitions Site Visits!

HANDS-ON LEARNING AT BU CITYLAB
By: Richard
BU CityLab
More Than Words took us on a site visit to BU CityLab so that we could learn about what they do there. BU CityLab is a training facility for people looking to get into the medical field. They get hands-on practice by doing tasks such as diagnosing patients. I was able to learn how to tell if someone has sickle cell anemia by looking at the hemoglobin in their blood. Thank you to Julia Hammer and Connie Phillips for setting up this site visit. We all learned a lot about CityLab and some of us are thinking about it as a good transition option. Click here to learn more about CityLab.

OPENING NEW DOORS AND SAVING LIVES

By: Yuri

Pro EMSWe went on a site visit to Pro EMS, which is a training program to become a  paramedic. They teach you skills you would need in real-life situations such as CPR and facilitated breathing. I learned that some of the challenges of being a paramedic include dealing with life or death situations, traumatic situations, and making quick decisions. However, it can also be a very rewarding career because you get to help a lot of people and even save lives. We would like to thank Chris Kerley for setting up this site visit. We really learned a lot! Click here to learn more about Pro EMS.

What is Transitions at MTW? Also known as the YOU job, Transitions is the time we devote to working on our personal goals surrounding our education, employment, and self-efficacy. To learn more, click here.

BRANDEIS GROUPS HELP OUT AT MTW
By: Domingo
Brandeis University
We had two volunteer groups from Brandeis University come here and help out MTW in January. Thanks to the students at Brandeis, we were able to get A LOT of work done that helped us hit goals in our store and online business! Some projects they worked on were managing sections, condensing basement shelves, finding orders, putting up new signage, making our pod safe, receiving to store, organizing our donations area, and so much more! I just want everyone to know how much they helped move our business forward and how much we really appreciate it. We hope to see them here again soon!

BOOKS, BOOKS, AND MORE BOOKS!!

By: Domingo

MTW has received some great book donations in the past month and our youth team has been a big part of it! Three times a week, Partners and Senior Partners work on outreach to various groups during book sourcing shifts, including publishers, libraries, schools, bookstores, and other groups. Leakia, Linda, Jason, and I have all been involved in reaching out to numerous groups which has led to amazing donations from Houghton Mifflin, Brookline Booksmith, and The American Historical Association Conference. We want to thank all of them for their support! If you know anyone who wants to donate books or run a book drive for us, contact our book sourcing team at bookdrives@MTWyouth.org.
Thanks for catching up on MTW! Make sure to stop by and warm up with a tasty drink from our cafe and a great book!
