Dear Friends of Leyv Ha-Ir ~ Heart of the City,
We hope you are all enjoying the start of summer. It is a quieter time for us, although there are still many activities going on. We are looking for someone to express his or her generosity by hosting our August 26 Bagels & Books brunch. This is when we will discuss the Rashi's Daughters books we are reading together as a congregation. It's a nice feeling to host our community and not really much work at all. Plenty of help will be available. Please contact Bobbi or Iris N. if you would like to host.
Recently you received an email asking you to "exercise your Judaism" by contributing to our fundraising campaign. Your synagogue needs your help at this time, and we hope we can count on you in order to continue the programming you've come to value at Leyv Ha-Ir. You can either send a check or donate online.
Stay cool. We hope to see you soon.
Bobbi, Iris N. and Roby

Eight Center City Religious Groups Meet on June 12, 2012
At the second of Four Economic Justice Forums, POWER secured commitments from Councilman Bill Green and Councilman Mark Squilla to fight for the unemployed and underemployed in Philadelphia.
Tuesday night, June 12, two hundred representatives, including 10 from Leyv Ha-Ir, from synagogues, churches, and mosques located in Center City gathered under the banner of POWER: An Interfaith Movement, in order to lift up the urgent need for a new jobs policy in Philadelphia.
Rabbi Julie opened the meeting with a prayer and asked the congregants to "risk and to act" in order to accomplish POWER's mission.

One Book, One Congregation | | Rashi's Daughters by Maggie Anton
Dear Chevre,
As revealed at our Annual Meeting, this year we will read the trilogy Rashi's Daughters, by Maggie Anton, for our One Book, One Congregation program. These books, which are meticulously researched historical novels, are set in eleventh century France. Each book focuses on one of the three daughters of the famous Jewish scholar known to us as Rashi. Reading them will immerse you in the day-to-day life of medieval Jewry and expose you to many fascinating Talmud texts. I loved reading these books! You can read any amount, from one chapter to all three books and then join in the Bagels and Books discussion scheduled for August 26 (see calendar for details). I'm excited about sharing this wonderful reading.
Love and Blessings,
Rabbi Julie

Our First Flea Market Effort
Thanks to Marsha Hyman's suggestion, we tried something new this year. Leyv Ha-Ir had its own booth at Germantown Jewish Centre's annual flea market. And because we signed up early, we had a great booth location. Many members contributed clothing, jewelry, household articles and whatever other "surplus" they had, and we raised over $200 at the flea market for our synagogue. There are still a few items we are trying to sell in other ways to add to this endeavor. Beryl & Howard Kravetz, Marsha Hyman and Bobbi Cohen had a lot of fun working our booth, a great team effort! Do you have any other fundraising ideas that we can easily accomplish?

Mozi Greenberg Bat Mitzvah Recap
Mozi Greenberg, daughter of Rabbi Julie, was bat mitzvah Friday, June 22nd. The auditorium of the Ethical Society was filled with family, friends and members of Leyv Ha-Ir. A beautiful service was held, along with a skit about the parshah of the week, Korach, acted out by young family and friends. Beautiful food and fun followed.
FROM RABBI:
Dear Leyv Ha-Ir~Heart of the City,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Mozi will say her own thank-you's but I want to let you know how very special it was for me to be in the heart of the city with my beloved congregation for Mozi's Bat Mitzvah. I was there with my own family and with you all who choose each other as chosen family. What a web we are weaving together. Thank you for gifting Mozi with such amazing generosity. We are deeply moved and appreciative.
Much love,
Rabbi Julie
FROM MOZI:
Dear Leyv Ha-Ir Congregation,
Thank you to all who could make it to my Bat Mitzvah, it was very special to have you there. Your many gifts were very generous. The shirt, the star bracelet, and the Havdallah set are all beautiful. I really appreciate the money.
Thanks so much!
Mozi
