Marking Life Cycle Events

Making a financial contribution to Congregation Leyv Ha-Ir is a great way to mark special life events, simchas, yahrzeits, etc. We are happy to send an acknowledgement of your contribution to a designee of your choice. Contributions can be sent to our regular P.O. Box address, or contact Evy Simon, at 215-561-7474 or evylhi@hotmail.com, if you'd like to have an acknowledgement card sent.

Thank you.

Dear Friends of Leyv Ha-Ir ~ Heart of the City,

Top ten reasons to go to the Leyv Ha-Ir ~ Heart of the City Annual Meeting Sunday May 20, 2007 at 11AM:

10. No tickets for the Phillies Game

9. Free Food

8. You're not going here: http://www.dgsociety.org/call_for_papers.php

7. You don't have to stay home and figure out who to vote for in the mayoral primary anymore

6. Your ex is going to the dungeons and dragons meet-up -- so it would be uncomfortable. http://dnd.meetup.com/136/calendar/5672485/

5. The Penn Center building is beautiful this time of year

4. I'm nominating you to council in absentia.

3. Your mother called and said it's the right thing to do.

2. To get the Jewish Exponent picture of Rabbi Julie autographed.

And the number one reason you should go to the Leyv Ha- Ir ~ Heart of the City annual meeting...

1. You're committed to the future of this excellent little shul.

See you there,

Michael Meketon, President

  • Message from Rabbi
  • Dear Chevre,

Spring has finally sprung and isn't it a joy to see the miracle of creation unfolding before our very eyes?

Speaking of creation, my 17 year-old son Raffi, who serves as my assistant in a one-room Jewish schoolhouse that I run on Sunday evenings for children, was teaching the creation story. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth..." He was helping the kids notice what was created on each of the seven days of creation. And he noticed that plants were created on one day and the sun and moon on the following day. "Mom, how could there be plants before there was sun?" I'll let you ponder this question.

If you'd like to hear various responses to this multi-valent question, come to our Annual Meeting. We'll do a go-round of your thoughts and also hear some rabbinic midrash. THIS IS A REALLY IMPORTANT PLACE TO SHOW UP! Our community is US and we need to be there! At this meeting, Heart of the City president Michael Meketon and I have exciting financial news to announce. We'll also be announcing the book that we're all invited to read for our One Book, One Congregation summer reading. And we'll be choosing leaders and programs for next year.

I hope to see each and every Leyv Ha-Ir-nik at this meeting!

    Love and Blessings,
    Rabbi Julie

Join us for our Shavuot Service Tuesday, May 22nd, 7:30PM Ethical Society, led by Rabbi Julie Greenberg. We celebrate the giving of the Torah, God's gift to the Jewish people. What better way to celebrate the occasion than by donating dictionaries of all types (English, foreign language to English)! Our Congregation will once again recognize BOOKS THROUGH BARS, an organization that distributes free educational materials to prisoners - thereby promoting successful community re-integration.
