Attention airport parkers! How to find the new Terminal 2 temporary parking lot

Rate lowered to $9/day

Airport Parking Map for T2 Closure

The parking lot in front of Terminal 2 has been relocated for construction to a new temporary lot located off McCain Road from Harbor Dirve - with rates at just $9/day. Note that while the parking lot has been relocated, all roadways remain open for drop-off/pick-up curbside at Terminal 2.

To reach the new parking lot, follow the yellow and green parking signs on Harbor Drive and turn on McCain Road, then turn right on Spruance. From there, passengers can choose to take the pedestrian walkway (a 5-10-minute walk to Terminal 2) or ride the free shuttle to the terminals.

The temporary closure of the Terminal 2 lot is necessary for construction of the dual-level roadway in front of the terminal and to proceed with underground utility work. Current plans call for portions of the lot in front of Terminal 2 to reopen in late 2012; the full lot will reopen when construction is complete in 2013.

Airport Authority launches California Least Tern Nest Counter for Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day 2011 and in keeping with its commitment to environmental protection, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority launched an online counter that tracks the number of California Least Tern nests in the airport's protected Least Tern habitat.LTNC May 16

The California Least Tern is a federally listed endangered seabird species that nests in protected areas on the airfield. San Diego International Airport (SDIA) is the most productive nesting colony for the species in the San Diego Bay area.

The Least Tern nesting season runs from approximately April to September each year. No nests have been reported at SDIA yet this season, however, on April 13, the first report this season of Least Terns in the entire state came from San Diego County, when seven of the birds were seen over the mouth of the Santa Margarita River on Camp Pendleton. The airport's Least Tern Nest Counter will be updated on a weekly basis as nest counts at SDIA are recorded.

Putting the "green" in The Green Build

Green Build Logo

The Green Build is being designed with an eye toward the environment. The ultimate goal of The Green Build is to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

  • Design and construction incorporates the use of alternative energy sources, recycled materials and renewable resources, leading to decreased water usage and reduced energy consumption.
  • Construction waste from the project, such as concrete, is being recycled and reused on-site.
  • Precautionary measures have been taken during construction to minimize impact on Least Tern habitat
  • Air emissions are reduced as part of The Green Build through the use of shuttles for construction employees and low-and zero-emitting construction equipment.

SDIA once again honored by City of San Diego as Recycler of the Year

recycle

For the seventh time, San Diego International Airport has been honored by the City of San Diego with a "Recycler of the Year" award.

The 19th Annual Waste Reduction and Diversion Awards, hosted by the City's Environmental Services Department, recognize local businesses and organizations that have implemented or expanded innovative and successful waste reduction, recycling and recycled product purchasing programs.

Highlights of the airport's recycling initiatives include:

- A new universal waste program, resulting in nearly 25,000 pounds of fluorescent light bulbs, batteries and other materials collected and recycled in 2010.

- Electronic waste collection events, which have contributed to recycling more than 51 tons of ewaste (computers, monitors, etc.) since 2006.

- A new central waste disposal and recycling facility opened in April 2010 that handles 95 percent of the airport's waste and recyclables, streamlining the airport's waste management system.

- Single-stream recycling program - this ongoing program, launched in 2003, has been a huge success; recycled waste product totaled more than 633 tons in 2010, saving close to $39,000 in annual waste disposal fees.

- In addition, a new policy was implemented in 2010 to require all large internal events to have recycling containers and processes in place.

The Airport Authority also received the Recycler of the Year award in 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2004 and 2003
