Art Program Header Final

Dear Friends,

We are excited to introduce to you our quarterly newsletter, Connections. For those of you who don't know, the Airport Art Program at San Diego International Airport presents work from individual artists and cultural institutions that promotes cultural tourism and impacts the public through customer service, community outreach, airport operations and facilities enhancements. Through temporary exhibitions, performing art and permanent installations, the program contributes to the airport's vision by presenting artwork that promotes regional prosperity and serves not only the traveling public, but also the greater San Diego region.  We are committed to providing you with insightful details about current projects, events, artists and opportunities. It is our goal to stay Connected to you. ENJOY!

Art Program - Peace
Peace by Rin Collobucci

Four San Diego studio artists were selected to design backsplash areas for drinking fountains in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.  Each artist's final artwork has been replicated into Italian glass tile mosaics. The original artwork, commissioned as proposals for this project, is now part of the Art Program's Permanent Portable Collection. The tile project is scheduled for completion in April 2011. more...

OTHER PROJECTS CURRENTLY BEING DEVELOPED

Local Artist, Miki Iwasaki, was commissioned last spring to create an interactive and engaging artwork for the Terminal 1 Baggage Claim area. Miki is currently developing a concept inspired by our constant encounter with grids. This project works with modules to create a large composition that can be observed from multiple perspectives. Patterned illumination will choreograph the grid with pedestrian movement below the artwork. (Anticipated completion October 2011).  more...

Temporary & Rotating Exhibits

Every six months, we work with museums, institutions,  and individual artists to create new installations for several different areas of the airport. A few of our most recent installations includes work inspired by the City-wide collaborative Art Meets FashionBeauty's Privilege, a survey of the Centennial of Naval Aviation and deconstructed constructions of paper and books in Tossed and Found by Sally Hagy-Boyer.

Fifteen assemblages Within the Heart of Time and Space by Jeff Steorts' hang in our Portrait Corridor. And, in our newest exhibition space: Gate 22, A Wire Runs Through Itby Lynne Merchant features notions of travel and tribal inspired jewelry.  Last but not least, our current youth art exhibit is from The Grauer School depicting Portraits of California

Many of the exhibits are pre-security.  If you happen to be driving past the airport, you are welcomed to use our self-guided map to tour the art while you are here; otherwise, we invite you to visit our web-site for more details about each of the exhibits.

Performing Arts

Did you know the airport has a performing arts series: a breve? Since 2006, the Art Program has transformed its concept of live performances at the airport.  Presentations include dance, theatre and other events that may support or relate to any of the cultural exhibits or community observations.  Our schedule of performances is conveniently located on our website for you.

Art Meets Fashion

The local fashion and art scenes have been brought together as never before in a series of events and exhibitions presented at various venues in San Diego in April and May. The airport featured a runway show with models wearing original creations inspired by 11 local teams, each consisting of an artist, a fashion designer, an educator and a documentarian.
