Airport reaches pinnacle in
passenger satisfaction scores

SDIA Pax

For the first half of the calendar year 2010, 89 percent of passengers surveyed rated SDIA high in Overall Satisfaction -- the highest cumulative score that has been observed at SDIA. In all, 356 out of 400 departing passengers surveyed rated the airport either a 4 or 5 on a 5-point scale.

The results are from an independent study conducted by Phoenix Marketing International, which also reported that in Quarter 2 of 2010 (April - June), 87 percent of San Diego International Airport passengers surveyed rated the airport high in the category of Overall Satisfaction.

In addition, the airport monitoring organization Airport Service Quality (ASQ) recently gave high marks to SDIA. ASQ rates 146 airports against other airports similar in size and scope. In two quarters of surveying, SDIA averaged a 4.16 overall satisfaction score on a 5-point scale, based on surveys from 700 respondents. This score places SAN 49th out of 146 airports worldwide.

Open Houses scheduled for    Regional Aviation Strategic Plan
RASP Open Houses

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority has been working with airport operators to assess long-range capabilities for all of the county's public-use airports, with the goal of improving the performance of the regional airport system. This process is known as the the Regional Aviation Strategic Plan, or RASP. Findings from the RASP will provide input to the San Diego Association of Governments' next update of the Regional Transportation Plan in 2011.

The public is invited to attend an upcoming open house to learn more about the Regional Aviation Strategic Plan and provide input on preliminary alternatives being considered. Four open houses will be held at various locations throughout the region:

California Senate Bill 10, authored by State Senator Christine Kehoe and passed in 2007, mandates that the Airport Authority, in collaboration with the San Diego Association of Governments, prepare the Regional Aviation Strategic Plan. It is up to each airport owner/operator (primarily the City and County of San Diego), whether and how to implement the findings identified in the RASP. More information is available at www.sdrasp.com, and questions about the RASP can be directed to info@sdrasp.com.

Airport photos come alive on Flickr

flickr globe logoDo you love photos, airports, airplanes ... or photos of airports and airplanes? Then you should check out the airport's new profile on Flickr®, a popular social media site devoted to photo sharing.

Visitors will find more than a hundred photos in SDIA's photo stream showing the wide range of activities happening at the airport, including educational programs, public art displays and The Green Build construction. The SDIA photo stream on Flickr is also home to vintage photos of the airport, as well as renderings of what is to come in the future as part of The Green Build.

Anyone with an Internet connection can view and download, within copyright restrictions, the airport's photos on Flickr and receive notifications when the airport updates its photo stream. Those who sign up for a free Flickr account can also comment on the photos, as well as upload their own images of SDIA to the airport's Flickr feed.

Green Build featured on local news

GB News Story

The Green Build construction project under way at San Diego International Airport is garnering a lot of attention for the economic boost, jobs, enhanced passenger convenience and improved airfield efficiency it will bring to Lindbergh Field.

Recently San Diego ABC affiliate Channel 10 News featured a special report on the project.  You can watch it here:

American Association of Airport Executives salutes SDIA on Facebook
The American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), which is holding its 2010 Russell Hoyt National Airports Conference in San Diego next month, recently saluted San Diego International Airport via Facebook recently, picking SDIA for its weekly choice on what it calls "Pick an Airport Friday."

Since SDIA and the AAAE are cross-linked via Facebook, the AAAE was able to post notice of the mention on the airport's Facebook wall. Here's how the post looked:

Update on Green Build pile driving activity

As part of The Green Build construction, test pile driving for the foundation of the Terminal 2 expansion is complete, clearing the way for production pile driving to begin in September. This work is needed to provide support for the structure of the Terminal 2 West expansion.

To minimize disruption, the piles will be pre-drilled. However, depending on proximity to the pile driving, one may hear noise or feel vibration.

Pile driving activity will take place during daytime hours only, from approximately 7 a.m. - 5 p.m., weekdays only. It is scheduled to last through December.

Summer air travel tips

Summer is here, and for many that means special getaways and vacations with family and friends. The Airport Authority has some important information for those using San Diego International Airport during the busy summer travel season.

Plan Ahead -
Flight status can be checked here.

TSA Tips - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website provides helpful tips on how to reduce wait times at security checkpoints, such as how to pack and what items are permitted and prohibited. These tips are available at www.tsa.gov.

Remember 3-1-1 - Follow 3-1-1 for liquids in carry-ons:
  • 3-ounce bottles or less for all liquids, gels and aerosols placed in
  • 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag
  • 1 bag per passenger, placed separately in a security bin for X-ray screening
The liquid restriction applies only to carry-on bags. Passengers can pack larger quantities of liquids and gels in checked baggage.

At SDIA, passengers who forget to bring a 1-quart plastic zip-top bag can receive one at the checkpoint, courtesy of the Airport Authority.

Valet Parking - The valet service was created to aid travelers in situations where time, convenience and parking availability are a concern. When coming to the airport, drive into the designated valet areas marked in front of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

When arriving back in San Diego, pick up your luggage first on the way to the valet cashier. Take the receipt to curbside valet and your vehicle will be brought to you.

Or send a text to 619-888-6675 with your ticket information once your plane lands, and your car will meet you curbside (please specify which terminal).

The cost is $30 per 24-hour period.

Short- and Long-Term Parking - The parking options available at SDIA include color-coded short- and long-term SAN Park lots:
  • Orange is for SAN Park NTC, located west of the airport
  • Green is for SAN Park Harbor Drive, located east of the airport
  • Blue is for SAN Park Pacific Highway, located north of the airfield
Free shuttle buses from long-term lots to all airport terminals are also color-coded and sport scenes of popular San Diego County destinations.

Cell Phone Lot - Located at 2701 North Harbor Drive. Motorists can wait in this parking lot for up to 60 minutes free of charge. Once cell phone contact is made between the driver and incoming passenger, the motorist can drive over to the terminal for quick, convenient traveler pick-up.
