Airport Master Plan: Draft Environmental Impact Report out for public review; new Web site launched |
|
A Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for Phase 1 Airport Master Plan improvements to SDIA is now out for public review, with comments due by November 30, 2007. The Airport Authority Board is expected to consider the Draft EIR for certification by Spring of 2008. There are several ways to learn about and provide input on the proposed Airport Master Plan.
A new Web site launched this month is dedicated to the proposed Airport Master Plan and SDIA's future: www.SANplan.com. There you can see renderings and review components of the proposed Airport Master Plan, access the related draft EIR, learn about upcoming meetings and get information about how to submit comments on the document.
Phase 1 of the Airport Master Plan for SDIA proposes a series of urgently needed improvements to allow the airport to meet demand currently and through the year 2015. These include a 10-gate build-out of Terminal 2 West and various parking, roadway and airfield improvements, like a dual-level roadway with self-service curbside check-in kiosks, as shown below.

| Long-range vision: Dialogues to help determine SDIA's long-term development |
|
To help determine the airport's long-term growth options, the Airport Authority has launched a series of Leadership and Community Dialogues, facilitated by Viewpoint Learning. Three Leadership Dialogues involving community leaders are scheduled for this month, followed by similar meetings with county residents early next year. Leadership Dialogues allow key business and civic leaders to look at the range of benefits and challenges involved in creating a long-term air transportation solution fo the region. They help identify options that will be explored in a series of day-long Community Dialogues, also known as ChoiceDialogue sessions, with San Diegans from around the region. At the interactive dialogue sessions, county residents will weigh the pros and cons of various choices and express what solutions they support.
The first Leadership Dialogue was held October 11 by the Airport Authority's Advisory Committee, made up of leaders from several industries and sectors throughout the county. After an overview of the Airport Master Plan, the committee divided into group discussions to identify approaches to San Diego's future air travel and related transportation infrastructure plans. Discussion included the number of gates and flights, access to and from SDIA, connections to public and freeway transit, best ways to utilize the land available at SDIA, cargo and freight shipments and commercial/residential development in downtown and outlying areas.

| Young artists pay homage to a master |
|
Stop by the Youth Art Wall between Terminal 2 East and West at SDIA, and your eyes will be treated to this colorful mosaic created by 65 fifth graders from Kumeyaay Elementary School in Tierrasanta. It's a tribute to the famous contemporary artist David Hockney and a work of his called Mulholland Drive. Each student worked independently on a one-foot square canvas to create the interpretation, on display through November 11, 2007. The Youth Art Wall is one of many artistic surprises you'll see around SDIA, brought to you by the Airport Authority's Airport Art Program.

| Calling all artists |
The Airport Authority is inviting artists to submit their qualifications to be considered for collaboration, design, fabrication and/or installation on several public art opportunities to be integrated into facilities at SDIA. Artists have until November 16, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. to submit their qualifications. For more information, click here. |

Reaching out to the small business community |
|
With all the projects under way at a busy airport like SDIA, the Airport Authority is eager to keep local small, disadvantaged and disabled veteran businesses informed about the variety of contracting opportunities available at the airport. One way it does so is through periodic "Meet the Airport Authority" gatherings hosted by the Airport Authority's Small Business Development Department, where representatives from local small businesses meet and interact with Airport Authority staff members to learn about potential opportunities.
One such event held October 11 at Liberty Station's NTC Command Center drew approximately 50 small contractors interested in opportunities related to projects overseen by the Airport Authority's Facilities Maintenance Department. Attendees learned about the Airport Authority's contracting process, and staff from the agency's Small Business Development, Facilities Maintenance, Procurement and Risk Management departments provided insight into how to do business with the Airport Authority.
The event exemplified how the Airport Authority's Small Business Development Department partners with other Airport Authority departments in order to promote contracting opportunities with the local small business community.

"The Board is gratified with the Governor's signing of SB 10. We believe our work with State Senator Christine Kehoe and civic leaders across the county has produced a law that will strengthen the Airport Authority and permit it to accomplish what is needed for more effective aviation service to San Diego County residents, businesses and visitors."

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority was established by state law in 2003 to operate SDIA and address the region's long-term air transportation needs. The Airport Authority is governed by a nine-member appointed Board representing all areas of the County. SDIA - funded through user fees and not local taxes - served some 17.5 million passengers in 2006. For more information, visit www.san.org. | |
