Digital History: Stories from Maine Memory Network
Historic Journal: Entries from Emerald Log Book, 1859
This log book provides a fascinating glimpse into the daily activities of the schooner Emerald which sailed out of Biddeford. Among other things, it records the number and types of fish caught by each crew member, and sightings of whales, sharks, and other vessels. The cod fishing industry is one of the topics explored in the upcoming MHS book discussion group, Extraordinary Histories of Ordinary Things. New Photography Show Explores Recent History of Protests in Maine
Just installed, Take to the Streets! (January 3-March 31) is the latest photography show in the MHS Lecture Hall Gallery.
| | Sheriff's Association pickets, Portland, 1981 |
Protest is on many people's minds. Today, of course, we honor Martin Luther King, Jr. whose acts of conscience and the protests they inspired transformed America. The "Occupy" protests of recent months raise fundamental questions about the causes that each of us feel are worth fighting for, where and how we can most effectively express ourselves, and how change happens in our society.
Protesting has a long tradition in Maine. Take to the Streets! looks at several causes that Mainers have spoken out on, ranging from civil rights and labor disputes to nuclear power and crank telephones.
Take to the Streets! displays photographs from United Press International. When UPI ceased operations in Maine, a collection of 3,000 photographs taken from 1966 to 1988 became part of the MHS collections.
