Holiday House Tours Visit the Longfellow House for a special holiday experience. This year's seasonal decoration and interpretation, based on family letters and documents, focuses on 1861. Objects have been added to illustrate both the emergence of Christmas as the holiday we recognize today, and the impact of the Civil War on the residents of the house.
Shop for the holidays at the MHS Museum Store! The museum store is renowned for its incredible selection of Maine related books, DVDs, and gifts. We have expanded the store for the holidays and filled it with a wide variety of seasonal items. MHS members receive a 10% discount on all purchases in our museum store and online. Click here for dates, times, directions, and more about Celebrate the Season at MHS.
Please note that on Thursday, December 15, we will be closing at 4pm. The last house tour will leave at 3pm. We will close at 2pm on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve with the last hour tours leaving at 1pm. |
Pre-Order Now: A Maine Prodigy
A Maine Prodigy is the story of Skowhegan native Mary Elise Fellows White, compiled from her autobiography, diaries, and other primary sources (now in the MHS library). A violin prodigy, Elise went to Boston in 1883 to study at the New England Conservatory. A Maine Prodigy evokes the joys and struggles of a woman who seeks refinement, artistic recognition, and financial security throughout her life. Her sharp eye and articulate voice echo throughout the book: "Surely someone must find my diaries worth keeping...I have put myself into them, heart and soul. All the life I have known is depicted in them..."
We expect to have copies available at the MHS Museum Store the week of December 19. (Delivery for Christmas is not guaranteed). To place an order, please e-mail or call Melissa Spoerl at (207) 774-1822 ext. 205, mspoerl@mainehistory.org.
