Letter from the front, Thanksgiving, 1861

This letter, written 150 years ago today, provides a poignant description of one unit's Thanksgiving celebration during the Civil War. Sent by James Mitchell in Relay, Maryland, to Persis Blanchard in Cumberland, it describes his Thanksgiving meal, wistfulness for Maine, observations about the war effort, and Neal Dow's regiment. Read the letter.
