Protests: Don't Yank the Crank
Mainers have been protesting for hundreds of years, for all sorts of reasons. Some protests confront deep moral or ideological issues, some are more whimsical. This 1981 image documents the campaign to keep the hand-cranked phone system in place in Bryant Pond. Maine Memory Network includes dozens of historical items and a great online exhibit that introduce a variety of protests across Maine history.
