Bill's Mythbusters
Fact Checking with William David Barry,
Maine Historian Extraordinaire
MYTHBUSTERS
NEEDS YOUR HELP!
One of the most frequent inquiries we receive at MHS regards the alleged tunnels that run through downtown Portland. It seems everyone has a story about a tunnel they (or a friend of a friend of a cousin) have traveled through. In an effort to uncover the truth, we're hitting the streets--talking to city officials, historians, business owners, and you!
We want to hear your stories about the Portland tunnels! Reply to our blog post or send e-mails to rdesk@mainehistory.org, subject line "Tunnel."
Next month in our August e-connection we'll reveal the mother of all Mythbusters so stay tuned. Visit the MHS blog for more about tunnels.

Stories from Maine Memory Network
Online Exhibit: Songs of Winnebago
Singing is often as much a part of going to camp as canoeing, crafts, and crushes. In 1964, staff of Camp Winnebago on Echo Lake in Fayette recorded an album of camp songs written by counselors, campers, and friends. This exhibit includes audio clips of some of the songs, along with other items related to the history of the camp. Visit the exhibit.

Bringing Henry Wadsworth
Home from Libya
Efforts to repatriate the remains of Henry Wadsworth from Libya are gaining momentum. Wadsworth, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's uncle and namesake, was killed along with 12 fellow sailors when the USS Intrepid, the ship on which they were serving, exploded in Tripoli in 1804 during the First Barbary War. The bodies of those men have remained in unmarked graves, and legislation moving through the U.S. Congress seeks to bring them home.
MHS Director Richard D'Abate recently told the Portland Press Herald that there are many unknowns in the effort to repatriate Wadsworth's remains, including whether the remains can be accurately identified and permission can be gained to bury them in Portland's Eastern Cemetery.
"If Henry Wadsworth could be identified and brought back to Portland, that would be a fine thing," D'Abate said. To learn more, read the June 19 article in the Portland Press Herald.

Set Sail on the Schooner Wendameen
With Historian Jim Millinger
Saturday, August 6, 10:30am-12:30pm
Join MHS for a sail on Casco Bay on board the historic Maine schooner Wendameen. Jim Millinger, Portland Harbor historian and former MHS Trustee and Casco Bay Lines skipper, will be our host, and will provide a narrated tour of the harbor's past and present. The 88-foot Wendameen, designed by John Alden, one of America's most celebrated yacht designers, was built in East Boothbay in 1912. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Help the crew raise the sails, take a turn at the wheel, or just relax and enjoy the talk and the scenery. This program is a perennial favorite and sells out quickly. Learn more.
