Genealogy Research Trip to Boston


Join MHS for a day of genealogical research at the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS). NEHGS, which was established in 1845, boasts a collection of more than 200,000 genealogical and historical volumes, over one million manuscripts, as well as census records, vital records, deeds, probates, military records, plus the latest resources in print, microtext, and CD-Rom. Individuals who would like to take the MHS bus to Boston for a day of sightseeing but who do not plan to do research are welcome. UPDATE: Unfortunately the Massachusetts State Archives at Columbia Point is now closed on Saturdays so the trip will not include a stop there. 

 

Registration required. Fee: $35 for MHS members; $45 for non-members. *Does not include admission to NEHGS Library (NEHGS Admission: NEHGS Members: Free; non-NEHGS members: $15). To register, please call 774-1822.

Longfellow Garden Club Annual  

Spring Plant and Pie Sale 


The plant sale is an annual tradition and great opportunity to support the care of the Longfellow Garden. Plant materials for sale include plants from members' gardens, Labrador violets from the Longfellow Garden, daylilies, quality 4" geraniums, and much more! Rain or shine.  

Location: North Deering Congregational Church, 1364 Washington Avenue, Portland.

Maine Member Day: Free admission to participating locations 


This Saturday your MHS membership card will open the doors and provide free admission to museums, gardens, and historic homes from Kittery to Bar Harbor. Museums and cultural organizations across the state are partnering on this new member benefit initiative. See great works of art, learn about Maine's Native American heritage, get hands-on with science for kids of all ages, and much more. Be sure to pack your membership card!

 

Participating institutions*: Portland Museum of Art, Maine Maritime Museum, Abbe Museum, Children's Museum & Theater of Maine, Maine Discovery Museum, Penobscot Marine Museum, Owl's Head Transportation Museum, Wendell Gilley Museum, Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Farnsworth Museum, McLaughlin Gardens, General Henry Knox Museum, Boothbay Railway Museum, Victoria Mansion, Maine State Museum, and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.

The Annual Olmsted Lecture 

The Longfellow Gardens: The Evolution of Two Landmarks  

Speaker: Lauren Meier, Pressley Associates, Cambridge, MA

Join us to learn about the rich history and recent rehabilitation of the Longfellow Garden at MHS and the garden at the Longfellow National Historic Site in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Meier, a landscape architect with a specialty in historic preservation, contributed to the rehabilitation of both gardens.  This event is held in partnership with the Longfellow Garden Club. MHS Annual Meeting: Looking (Back) at Television   

Join us to conduct the official business of MHS!  The annual meeting includes awards, the welcoming of new Trustees, and a talk by Fred Thompson, former head of the Maine Broadcasting System (1983-98), on the early days of television in Maine.
