BogyOnline Exhibit:

Capturing Arts and Artists in the 1930s

Despite the economic difficulties presented by the Depression, Maine thrived with artistic activity in the 1930s. Between 1933 and 1940, Emmie Bailey Whitney, editor of the Lewiston Journal Saturday Magazine, and her husband G. Herbert Whitney, an accomplished amateur photographer, chronicled the work of a number of artists, writers, and others connected to the arts in Maine. Their newspaper articles and accompanying photos celebrate the 1930s version of Maine's "creative economy." View the exhibit.
