While no full-time Maine resident has been elected president, Mainers have always followed presidential politics, candidates, and campaigns closely. Hannibal Hamlin was Abraham Lincoln's Vice President (1861-4), and prominent Mainers have been candidates, including James Blaine (1884), Margaret Chase Smith (1964), and Edmund Muskie (1972).
These images capture some of the excitement of past presidential campaigns and presidential visits to the state -- enthusiasm that transcends political affiliation and eras. View the exhibit.
If you missed Lois Brown's lecture at MHS last week, you can still hear her discuss Maine author Pauline Hopkins' life, literary career, and activism on Maine Public Radio. Listen now.
Join us for a family party to celebrate Longfellow's 204th birthday! Special guests, including historian, former State Rep., and orator-extraordinaire Herb Adams, will read Longfellow's poetry. Come and enjoy craft activities, prizes, cake, and a birthday card for Henry for everyone to sign. Fun for all ages! The party is free and open to the public.
This selection of images captures the changing way Longfellow was seen by the public and the public demand for images of the beloved poet. The prints, photographs, and paintings clearly document the aging of Longfellow, probably best recognized from later portraits with his full white beard.
