Ice Harvesting, Kennebec River, ca. 1900
|
Online Exhibit: Ice: A Maine Commodity Maine's cold temperatures, numerous bodies of water, location, and maritime infrastructure all helped make ice harvesting an important and far-reaching industry in the state in the nineteenth century. Dozens of Maine communities were involved, and in peak years more than 25,000 Mainers participated in the harvest. Monopolies emerged, fortunes were made, and Maine ice was shipped as far as South America. View the exhibit. |
