Update: New York Times Celebrates Purchase of Mechanics BannersIn a year-end Antiques column marking the highlights of 2010, the New York Times recently celebrated the collaborative effort led by MHS to keep 17 linen banners created by the Maine Charitable Mechanics in Maine. The Times cited the purchase as one of several "good omens" during a challenging time for museums. The column also provided a case study, and included a link to the online exhibit about the banners on Maine Memory Network.

Looking to give some shape to your winter reading list, and for a chance to connect with other MHS members and friends?
With the new year upon us, we are nearing the start of our latest book group at MHS. This year's theme: American historical fiction. Titles include: The Fort, Bernard Cornwell's new novel featuring Peleg Wadsworth and the Penobscot Expedition; The Big Sky, A.B. Guthrie's classic of the West; As the Earth Turns, Gladys Hasty Carroll's upbeat portrait of Maine during the Depression; and Let the Great World Spin, Colum McCann's recent novel about New York City in the 1970s.
The group will meet Tuesdays at 7pm in the MHS lecture hall: February 22, March 22, April 26, and May 24. Register now: space is limited and the group fills quickly! Registration deadline is January 28. Details and registration.
