Black & White reversal film stocks have
always been a favorite of film programs that teach "Old School" film methods
like cutting on film. It is an opportunity for students to do hands-on
exercises with real motion picture film.
Because these films where handled by students the perfection of the
processing was not considered to be that critical. Today we are seeing more and more demand for
the professional use of these black and white film stocks for projects that
want to capture the unique aesthetic these reversal film has to offer digital
production.
Most of us remember the classic black and white
Super 8 commercials and music videos such as the Nike "Revolution Spot" and
Paula Abdul's music video "Straight Up" and Madonna's "Erotica". These are just a few of examples of the
classic staying power of this black and white reversal material. More recently, these stocks have been used in contemporary projects for the
musician Beck, and commercial television campaigns for NASCAR.
Scanning these stocks to
Hi-Definition is a unique blend of old and new technologies. The rich look and textures of reversal film
materials with the amazing display and manipulation of digital technology.
Pro8mm will be offering a daily run of black &
white. In addition, special service such
as push and pull processing and special runs will also available.

We
knew that Ken Paul Rosenthal's images were gorgeous when he came in to scan
the stunning black and white footage for his film Crooked Beauty on the M2, but we were just in awe when we saw his
gorgeous edited trailer.
About the filmmaker:
Ken Paul Rosenthal makes film to
cultivate a more participatory relationship with the animate world, and build
community through live, conscious dialogue. His recent projects weave personal
and political narratives into landscape imagery. (photos by Ken Paul Rosenthal) Trailer for Crooked Beauty
In his own words
"Super 8 was the very
first motion picture format I was introduced to in film school. Within the
confines of formal training, super 8 was considered a mere stepping-stone
towards more 'professional' gauges and methods. In hindsight, its economy of
means-low cost, ease of operation, and especially its portability-planted
sacred seeds for what was to blossom into my film practice. That is,
shooting film not just as a means of 'taking pictures', but mindfully and
intimately exploring the phenomena of the world.
My current project, Crooked
Beauty, is a poetic documentary that explores positive and
progressive models for transforming the experience of madness in contemporary
Western culture. The film chronicles the transformation of an artist/writer
from a victim of the psychiatric establishment to enlightened co-founder
of The Icarus Project-a grassroots mental health support network and media
project that inspired the burgeoning Mad Pride movement.
Fragmented montages
of urban and natural landscapes-shot entirely in super 8-evoke the fluctuations
of mania and depression as a backdrop to the testimony. With my Canon 1014XLS
camera in hand, I've been flaneuring (wandering) in search of images
that characterize the polarities of extreme mood states. The ease with which
super 8 cartridges can be inserted and removed permits quick switches between
multiple stocks. Mixing up a wide palate of black & white, color, and fast
& slow stocks offers me compelling photographic analogs for embodying the
shifting facets of madness. "

Testimony
My experience with
Pro 8 was 'state of the art' in terms of the transfer, as well as the service.
Phil was a dream to work with. He's remarkably patient, has an exceptional eye
for detail, and was particularly dedicated to helping me achieve a look that
complimented my vision. I've been making super 8 films for over twenty-five
years and have never seen such rock-steady transfers.
Thanks Ken, we like you too!

Look at these:
Just in from two of our filmmakers:

Filmmaker Lowell
Northrup from Los Angeles shot the band Marcy Playground using Pro8mm workflow- MUSIC VIDEO MARCY PLAYGROUND
This piece for Marcy
Playground is for the title song in the new CD "Leaving Wonderland in a
fit of rage" Lowell shot with a MAX 8 1014 and a Max 8 Classic Pro with crystal sync sound. The film was in HD native 1080 to Pro Ress scanned on our M2 scanner.
In his own words " I used Fuji Pro8/63 for everything. I went
to Memphis
having no idea what the weather was going to be like. I did, however, know
there would be A LOT of green. This stock did the job. I knew this format would
be ideal for this particular song. Regardless of the video's budget (it was
low), I don't think any other medium would have been right for this. I'm hoping to shoot some more Pro8mm very
soon!"

 Filmmaker David Dibble Shot
a trailer with his MAX 8 1014-XLS. This was shot on just 6 rolls of film. Pro8mm donated the workflow to this non profit organization. A 6 roll HD package to Pro Ress is $454. Watch this trailer. It is unbelievable to think you can get this kind of production value for such a small price tag! Super 8 Film Trailer for Going Green Film Fest
In his own words
" This is a trailer I made for the Going Green
Film Festival, a fundraiser for the Minorities In Broadcasting Training
Program. The festival is April 2-4, 2010 at the Writers Guild Theatre in Beverly Hills.
Filmed in Hanford, California. Shot on Super 8 (Canon 1014 XL-S
with 16x9 MAX 8 modification). The film
stock was Pro8/07. Transferred at Pro8mm to HD ProRes 422.
