Not since Neil Young's Year of the Horse has their been such a monumental effort to use Super 8 as the predominant medium in a documentary. Montana based award winning photographer, turned filmmaker Kurt Markus has raised the ante, shooting John Mellencamp on tour with a riveting 400 rolls of our repackaged Kodak Vision 3 500T Pro8/19 (which includes our prepaid processing) , several Max 8 7008 cameras with crystal sync, and a blimp that had not been used in years. He shot just one stock, allowing it to go from day to night, on the road and on the stage, capturing a moving montage of the performer as he journeys across America performing. From recording sessions, live performances ,playing at churches and smaller venues, the footage just makes you want to sing Mellencamp's famed "Ain't That America" .
Pro8mm is loving this personal journey with Kurt Markus, and the opportunity to become intimately involved with the project. Markus is a filmmaker who is self sufficient and very hands on, with just himself filming and his son Ian as Wing Man on video. The many hours of Kurt being here to supervise the scanning , thanking everyone at Pro8mm who made this project happen, from the camera techs, to the lab staff, to the project coordinators, to the personal relationship we have formed with him and his beautiful wife/agent Maria. It has given us all the feeling that we are doing something very unusual here. The images are gorgeous beyond description. The marrying of nostalgia from the music is heightened by the super 8 images. It just would not be the same in video. We all have high hopes for this most intriguing piece, which is destined for the festival circuit, as well as music videos when Mellencamp releases his new CD. We will post a trailer as soon as it becomes available. We first worked with Kurt Markus when he shot Jewels' Goodbye Alice In Wonderland on super 8 a few years ago shooting just two set ups on just 6 rolls of Super 8 film. Read about the tour . Pro8mm PLAYING WITH THE "A" TEAM - We like this!
As film labs become more and more boutique, no longer offering everything to everyone, Pro8mm has found themselves frequently working hand in hand with some of the major labs who work on the "guts" of the project while we handle the Super 8.
One such cooperative effort is between Pro8mm and Fotokem. The film "Days Of Grace" is a multi-format film that is shooting 35, 16, reg 8 , Super 8 and various digital formats. We have also been working with Technicolor on the 35mm release of The Fighter, (Mark Wahlberg and Amy Adams) a drama about boxing champ "Irish" Micky Ward which uses Super 8 in some scenes in the film. Duart also collaborates with us for regular 8 material that needs to be scanned to HD. Kodak has been conferring with Pro8mm to discuss technical and product issues unique to Super 8 filmmaking and how we can collectively make the shooting experience better for everyone who want to shoot on Super 8 film.
